Join the APA!

If anyone is interested in becoming a member of the American Psychological Association (APA) as an undergraduate student, here is a link to the APA page: http://www.apa.org/membership/student/index.aspx. The eligibility page states that “all undergraduates taking psychology courses can become an APA affiliate.” Furthermore, if you join between now and Dec. 31st, your membership would carry over to next year, as well. Benefits include receiving the APA journal, scholarships and awards, and special rates for registering for the APA convention. Lastly, it costs $35 for undergraduates to become members. Best of luck!

Interested in Abnormal Psych?

Hi everyone,

Since it seems like several people in our class are interested in clinical psychology, I’ve shared some of my findings in this post related to clinical psych labs in the New York City area. Specifically, I posted a link below to Hunter College’s (CUNY) Psychology Labs, if anyone is interested in gaining further research experience directly related to topics such as autism, depression, and psychopathology. The page also lists labs focusing on developmental, social, and bio-psychological research, as well.

Here is the link: http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/scimon/research/facultylabs/psychology-lab-opportunities

For clinical psychology, I’d suggest looking into Dr. Miranda, Dr. Dennis, and Dr. Mennin’s labs!

Best of luck!

The IAT

Hey guys,

In class I spoke about using the IAT in my lab and for my own independent research. As I said, the IAT that is the most well-known is the race IAT which can be found here (it’s the 3rd one):

https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html

This website can help you understand what the IAT is by actually allowing you to complete one (and adding to the data). There are also a few other versions of the IAT if you are interested in them. Take a look at them, they’re pretty cool.

I couldn’t find the environmental sustainability IAT online but I did find an article about it:

http://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/blog/internal-attitudes-climate-change-matter

For those who are working on environmental sustainability in their labs might want to check it out.

Career Opportunities

Hey guys,
In our I/O lab as one of the tests we will be using an ability profiler from ONET for our research. After looking through the website I found something that was really interesting and applicable to us as students, especially if you are still undecided about your career choice.

http://www.mynextmove.org/

The link above allows you to look up careers that you are considering taking up. It shows the outlook for the career you select as well as skills you would most likely need to work in that field.
If you are unsure of what it is exactly you’d like to do, you can take an interest profiler that links you up with possible careers most suitable to your likes and personality.
Hope this helps!

TedTalk How to Deal with Stress

I came across a Ted talk about stress that I found quite interesting and helpful. We all will undoubtedly come across stress, whether while studying for GREs, making graduate school deadlines, or juggling school, work, and life.  The talk with Kelly McGonigal discussions studies which have found that in changing your perceptions about the psychological onset of stress on your body can change and negative health effects of stress into positive ones of courage and resistance. Examples provided include thinking about stress as a positive and exciting challenge and your body’s reaction of an increased heart rate and sweating are there to help “pump you up” and get you ready to meet the challenge, instead of there to negatively affect your performance.
