My name is Alyssa Lubrino and I am a new student at Baruch. My background takes place in Staten Island, where I was born and raised. This is my first time leaving the island on a regular basis. My main passion is swimming, one of the only things I am good at and truly enjoy participating in. I come from a large family with three brothers and a sister.

When I am asked to describe experiences that have shaped who I am, many things come to mind. Firstly, coming from a big family has always shown me that it is important to be there for people. I would like to think I am there for the members of my family and they are always there for me. I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have this support in my life and I strive to be there for people in this same way.

Swimming has also taught me many things about life. Because of swimming through grammar school and high school, I began to bring this talent into other areas, like community service as well as working as a lifeguard during my summers. As for community service, since the ninth grade I have coached kindergarten, first, and second graders from the swim team I was on as a child. Through my high school, I also began to coach special needs children and try to get them as comfortable in the water as possible. Through this, I learned that in helping other people you find out more about yourself and become a better you.

As a college student I actually have many expectations. I expect to work hard and be pushed to my full potential academically. I also hope to join in the Baruch community by joining clubs as well as the swim team. My main concern for the first semester is becoming accustomed to the workload and getting used to the differences of college. I hope that by the end of the first semester I will know most of the ropes.
