My role as a Baruch Honors student is so much more than obtaining good grades. Sure it may have been the academic achievements that had gotten me this scholarship but being a Baruch Honors student is a lot more meaningful than classroom success. It is essential that as a Baruch Honors student, that I learn to give back to my community. During high school I was involved with Self-Help, which was a volunteer program where we provided services such as creating fun events to allow the elders to participate and socialize with one another. This was important, I realized. Becoming older didn’t mean putting a stop on all the entertainment and fun that people use to have.
As a Baruch Honors student I believe that our minds should be open to the world around us and not confined in a four-walled classroom. Whether it’s senior citizens, children, animals, or the environment they are all part of our community. Having all the advantages and benefits the Honors Program provides, I think we should take into consideration of how much other people don’t have rather than to soak in all the glory. Our role in the Honors Program is to make a change in our community for the better just as the Honors Program has changed our lives for the better.
This all ties together with the community service project in which the Honors Program proudly promotes, making students aware that it is important to give back to others just as how the Honors Program gave to us. My group is planning on working together with Bidawee, which is a program that helps abandoned animals find safe homes. Animals need love and care just like human beings. Selflessness is an experience that has to be acquired through helping others, not a term learned from a dictionary.
