Journal Entry Two

In my few months here at Baruch I sometimes feel as though I am just one of the thousands of students enrolled at the college without a purpose and without a reason; not Raquel Azizo, but simply “ra102116.” However, I recently realized that there is more to me than my student id number and even though I do not live on campus or go to a college in another state like some of my other friends, there is still a possibility for campus life and a real college experience. As a Baruch Scholar I am extremely fortunate to receive so many perks and privileges, but with that comes a responsibility and an expectation. Therefore, my role as a scholar is to give back to the Baruch community and my own community as well. I always felt as though one gets in order to give back. I also know that wherever I am headed with my knowledge acquired from Baruch and whatever field I will go into, I know I will always give back to my community, after all its what shaped my life to be what I am today. I must not take my privileges for granted and must use them to my fullest potential. I have the city, and the world for that matter, at my fingertips and it would be foolish not the make the best of it. Unfortunately, many are not able to see the importance of community service and that is where the Honors program culture of service comes into play. By reinforcing the benefits community service has, it is only helping the people in need, but highly important for the growth of an individual as well. I now know that I can prove myself to be more than a number, and with the help of the Baruch College Honors Program I am also an example for others who can then see how enriching it can be to get involved and help out.
