As a student and Baruch Scholar, my primary role, currently, is to dedicate myself to my education and studies so that I may receive excellent grades and accomplish my future endeavors. Although the desire to get good grades is a strong driving force it is not the only reason why I place such a great importance in my education. Through my education I will be able to obtain the insight and knowledge needed produce changes and to serve my community. It is through my education that I will be able to become a lawyer and help unfortunate people in need of my assistance and in my own way lend a helping hand to the broader community. However, it is also extremely important to become active within the community now.
Currently I am still in the adjustment phase in my transition from high school to college life. My experience thus far and the exposure to the Baruch culture and the many activities that are available to students have been very exciting. As I have heard many times before time management is the key to success in college and in everyday life in general; however learning to mange one’s time can be a difficult process which leaves a very small amount of time for other activities. As of right now I am not as actively involved in the community in the way that I would like to be. I believe that to serve the community involves working on hands on activities that improve the current conditions of the community. This can be done through community service, such as park clean ups, fund raising for different causes, some of which include cancer and diabetes, and maintaining or working towards a healthy environment. One way in which Baruch ensures that we use the skills and experience that is amassed at school to aid the community is through the community service requirement. I view this service not as an obligation but as an opportunity to break free of our comfort zone and reach out to create beneficial changes to the community. The project that my group and I are pursuing centers on the New York Audubon organization, which helps to preserve the wildlife of NYC. Under normal circumstances I might not have taken the initiative to tackle this task because of the pressures of college even though I am very passionate about the preservation of wildlife on a domestic as well as global scale; however through the Scholars program we are encouraged to step forward and lend a helping hand.
Baruch offers many opportunities to help others in the community. I will be able to employ my skills and talents to not only improve the broader community but to build on my own self-confidence and ability to create a change. It is a matter of great pride that I have been given the opportunity to experience college life as a Baruch Scholar and I intend, in the upcoming semester, to fully take advantage of all of the facilities available to students here at Baruch.
