What does it mean to serve your community?

I strongly believe that for me to serve my community I must be willing to make sacrifices in order to benefit the greater good. As Albert Einstein said “only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” With respect to the Baruch community, I believe that I should set an example and be able to do what many others may not be willing to do so. This may include tutoring another student, or perhaps volunteering at an organization and not necessarily getting credit for it.

As we all know, Baruch is one of the most diverse colleges in the nation, and with this diversity comes great responsibility from all of us. We must learn to be tolerant and accepting of other, and we must not be quick to judge. Because of all of this, I think that another good way to serve the Baruch community is to be able to bring my own diversity into the mix, and be able to contribute to the larger world.

As a Baruch scholar I know that I have a lot of duties that I must uphold. Obviously the most important would be to maintain academic integrity. This means that in a way I will be serving the community by not cheating and plagiarizing my work. I have been given a great opportunity to be a part of the Honors program, and I know that I must strive for excellence, as well as pursue a spirit of servant-hood in my academic career as well as the career that I wish to have in the future.
