The community gives one a sense of having somewhat of a second family. So to me when I give back and serve my community i feel a sense of tranquility, pride, and connection. It also gives me a sense of accomplishment. Serving my community puts me in a peaceful state of mind because I feel that I’ve done my part in showing my appreciation for what my community has done for me. The best part is that one doesn’t have to do something big or extravagant, merely helping out an elderly cross the street shows the community that one cares. It gives that person a good reputation based on the simple actions one does thinking no one is watching when in reality someone always notices. it sort of reminds me of that quote that goes “The best things in life come in small packages.” Having served my community has helped me with the role I hold at Baruch. My role isn’t anything big, I haven’t become a leader in regards to being team captain or president of any club, however it has helped me in a different way. Through giving back I feel as if I have become a better person. It has taught me to be respectful, appreciative, and has strengthened my character. Having appreciation plays a huge role personally for me especially since I have been accepted into the Baruch Honors Program. I am very thankful that I have been given this opportunity. Being involved with my community, going through different experiences, having been able to be part of other people’s experiences has definitely taught me never to take anything I have been given for granted.
