Journal #3

As Baruch College students we are offered a variety of resources at the school, such as faculty, peers, staff, support centers, student clubs, and many others, as well. My participation in the Community Service Project encouraged me to draw upon the expertise of faculty and staff in order to find an organization that my group members and I would be happy to volunteer for. During the first couple of weeks of school, our class was introduced to one of the many librarians at Baruch College, and he showed us the various databases the Baruch College library has, as well as several websites to help us find an organization. His expertise definitely helped our group to find an organization that we were interested and wanted to work for. Besides the library, I have also visited the Undergraduate Student Advisement Center, which helped me to better understand the registration process, as well as help me transfer my credits from Queens College. I was also planning on joining a student club this semester, but unfortunately was unable to do so. I was very busy with all my other schoolwork and felt it was better to get accustomed to the school during the fall semester and to join a club later, possibly during the spring semester. Using these resources for my team project has helped me realize that they are available to us as students of Baruch College, and this also helped me to learn how to use them properly. Learning about support centers such as SACH and the Writing Center has shown me that when times get tough and I fall a bit behind on my schoolwork, I do have other students and teachers to guide me and help me get back on track. Through my participation in the Community Service Project I was also able to better understand the concept of community service, because it inspired me to want to do more for my community and give back. It showed me that there are many organizations that are in need of volunteers, and that we should take advantage of these opportunities because not only will it help us to grow as individuals, but our community, as a whole, can grow, as well, as a result of our help and volunteer work.
