Many support centers are available for us Baruch college students. One resource that I thought was very useful was the community service websites offered by the librarian Stephen during a presentation in the library. Prior to these websites, I knew that I wanted to do something in the medical field, but only because of a personal preference. Luckily, my group complied to my idea as I personally feel very strongly about assisting patients via direct care. Although participating in the hospital is irrelevant to my prospective major of management or accounting, I firmly believe that patients feel a lot of stress alongside anxiety when they are in a hospital, particularly those of old age or foreign decent with limited communication skills. Now doctors and nurses may be there to make them feel good, but that does not necessarily take away the pressure they feel before an operation or test results that may be negative. Thus, with volunteers such as my group and I, we hope to be there for these patients as we are offered positions in limited direct patient care. We may not be able to be the ones to treat them, but being there to comfort them or entertain them at times necessary is just as important. In my upcoming semesters at Baruch, I will definitely join clubs with business backgrounds and I will utilize resources offered by staff and faculty such as Stephen to find outside related sources to enhance my knowledge and background of that which I intend to major. At the moment, my community service project is justĀ as important, because it is something I am personally connected to and I know that my participation in the hospital whether it be long term or short term will be time well spent.
