Journal #3: Next Steps…

Through the community service project, we got to learn about many of the resources at Baruch that are available for us to take advantage of. For one, there is the library session that we did during one of our freshmen seminar classes that introduced us to idealist, which is where we found the organization we wanted to work with. In addition, we were also introduced to the library’s enormous data base. This project gave me the chance to look into donating more than money back to aid the society but also my time and effort. Without the project, I can’t really say I would have allotted time to volunteer. I am grateful that it has reminded me of how fortunate I am, and pushes us to give back to our communities.

I can not believe my first semester at college is almost over; I don’t even know where all my time went. Throughout the semester, I saw myself improve a lot on my time management. I felt like everything I have dedicated my time to was worth my while and I know will not regret any of it. The coming years, I hope to continue to take advantage of all that Baruch College and the Scholars Program offers me. In three years, I hope to be very involved in school as well as outside of school. I would like to have joined many different organizations and taken many steps in my career. I hope I would have found the right path for me in terms of my profession. And most of all, I hope to be in this Scholars program with every single one of my classmates and watch everyone excels together.

Before my very first volunteering experience, I always saw it as a requirement. I went to a Catholic middle school and there, it was part of the confirmation process. Personally, I am not Catholic and therefore was excused from that assignment. Through that I got to watch my classmates take on extra work for essentially nothing in return. It was not until high school was I exposed to the act of volunteering.

My first volunteering experience was at a summer classes program. There I was in charged of assisting with the teaching of a class of younger students. At first, I approached it like I would a job, except without the pay. I hated waking up early in the morning to a full day of work in the summer. However, as time went on, that feeling warmed into one of pride and fondness. I grew an attachment to the students I worked with, and I take pride in their accomplishments. I was proud of every single one of them, even the really playful and energetic ones. To me they were like my children in a sense. I was honored to be able to be a part of these children’s development and growth.

Through my volunteer experience, I also found that I was not the only one offering my time and energy to the groups of students in the program. A lot of the adults are volunteering their own time off the clock to make sure the students are understanding the material they were taught. From that I got a great sense of community and the value of giving back to that community hit me for the first time.

My main role and focus here at Baruch is that of a student but at the same time I am a member of the Baruch community. As a part of this community, it is important for me to give back what I have received. And the culture of service in the Honors Program really reminds us of that. Sometimes we are so overwhelmed with work that we often forget to give back or convinces ourselves that we do not have time give back to our society. The service aspect of our program helps us take a step back and make time for meaningful things like community service.

Hi everyone,

My name is Karen Lam and I currently live with my family in Astoria, Queens. The three things i value the most are my family, my academics, and my time. Before coming to Baruch, I attended school at Brooklyn Technical High School. Having been at such a competitive school, I have been surrounded by highly motivated students for most of my high school career. As a result, my grades became one of my top priorities. The other two, although they have always been important to me, has always been placed below my academics until two years ago.

During my junior year of high school, my family and I received news from my grandmother that my aunt has been diagnosed with Leukemia. This news had shocked and impacted our lives even though we live an entire ocean away. Up until that point in my life, as well as I’m concerned tragic events like this only occurred in movies and books. At first, an aura of gloom hung around our house. But at some point, it became one of hope and acceptance. This experience helped me to live life one day at a time, cherish every opportunities I receive, and most importantly value the time I am privileged enough to have.

I expect college to be a rewarding experience not only in that I earn a degree but also in helping me develop as an individual. I hope I am able to maintain a high GPA and improve on my work ethics. Hopefully along the process, I would discover what I would like to pursue after college.

PS: For those wondering, my aunt made it past all her medical treatments and she is living as normally as she can.
