Journal 3

One of the reasons Baruch is a great school is that it has a multitude of services to help students achieve their goals. Baruch has services to help students succeed academically (SACC and the Writing Center),socially(clubs and teams), and professionally (Starr). As a first semester freshman, I have found all of the options exciting and slightly overwhelming. I have utilized many of these services and will continue to do so in the upcoming semester.

The Community Service Project is going to be an eye-opener to me, as one of my team members has found a creative and challenging project for my group. He was able to find out about a small non-for-profit, The Green City Challenge, through one of the sites we were directed to during our freshmen seminar meeting with one of the school’s librarians.
The Green City Challenge’s mission is to raise awareness, in NYC, about our biological footprint. My group is collaborating with the environmental awareness club to host an event on Earth Day. We will use games from The Green City Challenge to engage fellow students in the dialogue about how we can lead more sustainable lifestyles.

I have never hosted an event and this project will give me insight into various aspects create a successful event. Through using the resources presented to us (the visit with the librarian), my group has found a project that will give back to our school, foster our leadership skills and help us become conscientious of the impact of our lifestyles on the environment.

Journal 2- What is my role as a Baruch Scholar?

I believe that my role as a Baruch Honors Scholar is one of responsibly. As I have been given the privilege to attend college at no economic cost it is only logical to give back to my school and broader community. Foremost I aim honor my commitment to be an active student:to participate in clubs, get good grades, and contribute to a positive school environment. Once I’ve met my responsibilities as a student I would like to adjudicate time in my schedule to volunteer. To volunteer one must be willing devote time and energy to aid organizations or charities that need assistance. I believe some of the reasons the Baruch Scholars program promotes volunteering are that through working with people with different abilities and backgrounds than ours students become more accepting, knowledgable, and compassionate humans. We also develop “an attitude of gratitude” by working with those less fortunate than us. It is empowering to be able to feel that we have bettered others day, whether it be by distributing food in a soup kitchen or reading to little kids. In high school I volunteered at an after school program for special needs children. This was a rewarding experience as I was able to connect with the children and learn from them. My freshman seminar group is hopefully (not as yet finalized) going to be involved with feeding New York Cities hungry. Although I haven’t volunteered for this cause yet I am excited to see how my fellow group members and I can have a positive impact on our broader community.

Journal Entry 1- Where are you from and where are you going?

My name is Basya Buchbinder. I live and have grown up in Brooklyn. I was raised in a Jewish religious family and up to this point have attended religious schools my whole life. My parents are both hardworking individuals who have instilled in me the value of having a strong work ethic. Two extracurricular activities I participated in have helped shaped me as an individual. The first was volunteering (and eventually working) with the special needs children. This has made me a more accepting person and has made me less shy to volunteer in various circumstances. The other activity was being an “attorney” in my schools mock trial team. I joined on a whim since it seemed interesting. It turned out to be a great experience as my team was fortunate enough to get guidance from attorneys who work for the city government of New York. It was exciting to gain exposure to this field and perform in court. I am planning on joining the mock trial team in Baruch as a result of this experience.

As a college student I aim to further my education, become friends with people of various backgrounds and refine my organization skills. Although I have been having a difficult time transitioning from high school to college I hope I will become adept at time management by the end of this semester. I have recently begun taking advantage of all the assistance that this college offers (writing center, tutoring etc.) and they have proven to be helpful.I hope to remain in the honors program and take advantage of all that is being offered.
