Journal #3: Next Steps.

As a Baruch Scholar, I’ve found that the The Community Service Project has changed me into a person who isn’t afraid to ask for help anymore. When I wasn’t certain about what to do for certain parts of the project, I reached out to my colleagues. I learned that it’s more efficient to look for help rather than sit around and think about it myself. Through this lesson, I’ve found that my school work has improved tremendously. I’m able to produce work faster and learn faster by actually involving myself with others and speaking with my professors when I need to. Exposure to other ideas alone is enough to drastically improve my pace. Knowing that I have different resources really boosts my confidence in facing future courses at Baruch. There’s always somewhere I can turn to for help and someone I can talk to. Just having this support alone makes me feel capable of facing my challenges.

Community service itself is becoming more of an interest to me because of this project. At first, I was rather indecisive about what I would do for community service because I struggled to see myself helping anybody. I didn’t know what I could do to help, and what my efforts would accomplish. Putting together this project has taught me that my little efforts can make differences. I may not have been part of the volunteer work just yet, but I now have an understanding of what the programs capable of doing. Each person’s small effort makes big differences.

In the next three years, I can’t see where I am heading. I’m still uncertain of what I want to work for, but I’m certain that I’ll be facing hardships ahead. I see myself in the coming years walking down a difficult road, trying to find my destination. However, I’m not worried. I know that with every step I take, I’ll have the support and resources of Baruch behind me.

Journal #2: What Does it Mean to Serve Your Community?

What is your role in the Baruch and broader community as a Baruch Scholar in the Honors Program and what do you think it should be? How is this related to the culture of service the Honors Program promotes? [250 words]

I believe that being in Baruch as a Baruch Scholar in the Honors Program I should be taking full advantage of all the resources and opportunities I’ve been given. As a Scholar, I should be striving towards the best I can be. Moreover, the way I define the “best I can be” should be continuously growing. I shouldn’t be limiting myself towards a goal that can be easily obtained. Every time I succeed in reaching one of these goals, there should be something else for me to work towards. By taking these steps, I can further grow into the type of person I wish to become. By taking full advantage of all the resources and opportunities offered by Baruch, I am certain I’ll be able to reach each of my goals. I’ve been blessed to be offered this program, and I think that my role is to not take this program for granted and use all the benefits I’ve been given.

The culture of service the Honors Program promotes is related because it comes from the idea of giving back after receiving. Since we, the Baruch Scholars, have been given so many opportunities and resources, we should be returning our services to the community. If everyone in the community was given an opportunity to succeed, our whole community as a whole would grow and develop. I understand that I’m lucky to be able to receive this program. Even if I worked hard, this would not be possible if the city and Baruch did not have this program. Now that I’m here, I have to give back to the community as well.

Journal #1: Where Have You Been and Where Are You Going?

My name is Eric, and I’m a music/arts and sports fanatic. I love playing instruments, listening to music, dancing, and sketching. Sadly, I’m probably only decent at playing piano. Outside, I love playing sports. While handball and basketball are my main two sports, I really enjoy playing volleyball and baseball as well.

These two hobbies of mine (piano and handball) have really helped me grow as a person. I studied piano and music theory with a professor who helped me get over hardships when I was younger. She steered me away from the pessimistic views that I held towards this world, directing me towards optimism and success. My handball team had broken my isolation from the world. I feared speaking and dealing with people, but through the years I spent with them, I grew to be more vocal and outgoing. I even became a co-captain senior year. I learned to face people with a positive attitude regardless of how I felt about them. I grew to believe that I had to respect everyone regardless of how they acted or how they looked. Everyone has a story behind their life, and I learned to at least attempt to see things through their eyes.  Without these experiences through my hobbies, there’s a good chance I would not be the person I am today.

As a college student, I expect myself to take more responsibilities. I’m tired of burdening my parents with the stress that I create for them. I need to show them I’m capable of maintaining my own life, and taking care of my own priorities.

I hope my first semester lays a foundation for me that makes my path through these four years smooth and comfortable. My only concern is that I won’t know what major I want to choose when the time comes. Honestly though, I’m really not that concerned.
