The fact that the semester is almost over surprises me. Has it really been three months? At the same time, the past three months have felt much longer than that. However, the semester isn’t over yet and neither is the Community Service Project. I realize now that without the support of the staff and faculty of Baruch, the past three months would’ve been much harder. To start off, I would like to thank Stephen Francoeur for taking the time to help myself and other Baruch Scholars find the organizations that we would eventually volunteer at. I’ve volunteered at certain organizations before and have learned that it’s very important to make sure that you’re spending your time productively. Don’t spend the summer working for an organization that you later realize is not that great! Although I have not actually volunteered for my organization in the Spring yet, I have learned a lot about my organization through their site already. The proposal itself has also helped me think about the organization from a different perspective. Community service isn’t just spending hours doing mindless work as I had previously though. Community service is about giving back to the community and becoming a part of a greater cause through seemingly small actions.

I have learned a great deal from the support centers here at Baruch. Although I have not sought help from every center in Baruch, I have been to the Writing Center, SACC, and even the Student Health Care Center. These centers, especially the Writing Center, has proved to be very useful. I am not the best writer out there and that is exactly why I’m here at Baruch. I have learned valuable writing tips from the Writing Center and received help on assignments from SACC. Although the Student Health Care Center does not provide for me educationally, it gives me a feeling of confidence. I know that if I ever feel a cold coming, I could drop by the center to be checked out. Next semester, I plan on visiting the Study Abroad and STARR office to prepare and plan for the future that isn’t so distant anymore.

A big part of student life is, of course, clubs. Baruch emphasizes student life so much that it actually has club hours twice a week. With a slight feeling of guilty, I admit that I have not joined a club yet. From the beginning of this semester, I knew that I would settle in for my first semester and then consider clubs in my second semester here. Although I have not joined a club, I have attended a handful of informational events held by various clubs.

I imagine the experience of the next three years to be like driving like a road trip. There will be bumps here and there but I’ll eventually make it to my destination. Along the way, I’ll stop by places, meet new people, and experience many new things. I expect to see myself visiting STARR and the study abroad quite often. Hopefully, I would be able to build a strong resume and skills that will help me succeed not only in finding a job but in keeping one. In the last two years of college, I’m going to study abroad at least once. Although my parents are against it right now due to costs, I’ll do my best to work something out.

My current role Baruch is simply a student. Although I have been to two club fairs and a career fair so far, I do not feel as involved with Baruch as I would like to be. As a student who’s a part of Baruch Scholars, I believe that I should take advantage of all my benefits. Free tuition, among other things, has been the greatest benefit I have received from Baruch. Of course, I will not only be taking from Baruch. There has to be some balance between give and take. As a student with so many benefits from Baruch, I feel that it is only proper to get involved with the Baruch community. When I say get involved, I do not mean going crazy and joining all the clubs that are out there. In my first semester of college, I believe that I should be finding my place and welcoming new connections with people. I do not plan on becoming an active participant in many, if any, clubs because I’m still not used to the work load and expectations yet. Furthermore, I would like to get a good feel for what goes on in Baruch and the type of events it holds. Later on, however, my role should be that of a more active student. I plan on attending more club events and maybe even help out at a department here at Baruch.

In the broader community, I have both volunteered with children before. Every summer, I try to look for a place to work at to use my time productively. I can say that I enjoyed working with these children in different organizations. What I love most is taking these children on field trips where they actually experience something new and interesting. Going forward, I believe that I should volunteer in a different field. Although there are many children out there, there are others who can also gain from my help. Already, I’m going to contribute to the community as a part of FRO. I believe a big part of community service is helping others benefit whether it’s directly or indirectly from your work. The service that the Honors Program promotes does not end at just servicing Baruch; The Honors Program encourages servicing the community.

Journal Entry #1

Hi, my name is Jennifer. I’m from a family of five that lives in Brooklyn. As the oldest child of three, I was expected to be a responsible role model for my siblings. Since my parents both worked long hours every day, I was more or less in charge of my siblings. I can’t say I’ve doing a very good job at being a role model but if nothing else, I’m a hard worker. My parents don’t have to constantly be on my case about getting good grades because I’m my own motivator. If something that I do doesn’t seem 100% right, I change it until it’s satisfactory.

I attended Midwood High School before graduating and coming here to Baruch. In my high school, I was able to meet many people and mature as a person. Now that I’m at Baruch, I’m expecting an even greater experience. I wish to take courses that will increase my knowledge and allow me to grow even more as a person. Among all other things, I believe that Baruch has greater diversity and many more opportunities than my high school. There are probably tons of courses that I’ve never heard of before that are very interesting. Studying abroad is also something exciting that I plan on doing sometime in Baruch. I expect my first semester here in Baruch to be a little bumpy regarding the amount of work and getting used to a new environment. Hopefully, it’ll be smooth sailing after that and I can’t wait to get started.
