Journal 3- Next Steps

In my community service project I utilized idealist.org to find the organization called Food Bank NYC. The website was shown to me by the person from the school library who presented it to the Freshman Seminar class. I have only joined two clubs this years which were Golden Key and Mock Trial. I joined Golden Key because my peer mentor Maria Lorenzo suggested it to us all. It’s a very active club with seemingly many opportunities and so it will be an excellent experience for my college life. Mock Trial was a club I wanted to join because I enjoy public speaking and debating things in a trial format was very appealing to me.

I suppose that by learning to use the databases provided by the Baruch library, I am now ahead of the curve in some ways. I know how to find proper and credible sources for future research papers that I will have to do in my later semesters. The community service projected required research and so I had to use the resources provided to me by the library. My understanding of community service has evolved through my participation in this project. I now understand that my individual service to these charitable organizations help underpinning causes and that my volunteer work does matter.

In the next 3 years I see myself succeeding academically and possibly sustaining a 3.5 GPA which will let me stay in the Baruch Scholars program. I also hope to obtain some leadership roles and grow as a person. I’m gonna be treasurer of a film club my friend is creating so that will definitely be a cool experience for me. I’ll also have my major declared in the future and I’m sure whatever I choose will be something I’m genuinely interested in. Hopefully my future is as bright as I think it will be.

Journal 2- What does it mean to serve your community?

To serve your community it means to stand up and actively try to make your community better. Most people only do good things in society because there is an incentive like profit. The only reason to  to do the little things through volunteering is because you genuinely want to help your community. Or if you have required volunteer hours but hey at least you’re still helping out. I once volunteered at a charity organization called God’s Love We Deliver. They made and delivered food just to help people with serious illnesses like AIDS. I helped bag the food which isn’t as simple as it sounds. Each bag has an order of specific food and you have to make sure you put the right food in the bag. At first I volunteered there because I thought it would good on my college resume. But after going a few times I realized that I kind of liked volunteering there. I met friendly people and I had a good time working with them. I guess that was kind of serving my community and clearly me and the other volunteers contributed to the improvement of people’s health. There’s no money incentive for doing its because it’s just volunteer work and thats pretty cool that you can have a big organization just made of genuine and charitable individuals. So once again to serve your community means to actively help the society that you live in. Charity and volunteer work are two ways to help people from the bottom of your heart.

Journal Entry 1- Where are you from and where are you going?

My name is Jose Ayala and I was born in Puerto Rico. I only lived there for 3 years before me and parents moved to New York. Since then I’ve just been raised by my father and my mother. I suppose that a unique thing about my upbringing is that I am an only child. I don’t know what effect that has on me but I think it’s worth mentioning.

I don’t really have any culture that I would define myself by so in regards to values, I really just believe in what I think is morally right. My expectations in college are really just to get involved and make some new circles of friends. I also do want to learn new things for some classes but I really want to take advantage of the extracurricular activities in Baruch. One club I joined was Mock trial and I thought that would be cool because I like shows like Law and Order. My only concern for this semester is making sure my grades are excellent so I may maintain my scholarship. I don’t feel like any of my classes are very difficult this semester so it could potentially be pretty easy. I guess the only class I may have difficulty with is art history and that’s only because I don’t really appreciate art very much. I’m hoping that by listening to the professor and taking good notes that I will be able to truly understand art and their historical significance. Art history is not my favorite class at all.
