Baruch Scholars 2017

Journal #3 Group 1

The Community Service Project really encouraged me to utilize more of the resources available for me at Baruch. I mostly used the library resources, specifically the databases. During one of the freshman seminar sessions, we learned how to use these databases, as well as which websites would be useful in helping us find an organization. Primarily, we used Idealist to try and find an organization even though it did not work our for my group in the end. However, the use of databases was useful for me outside of the Community Service Project. For our public speaking class, we were required to find academic journals to support our claims for our speeches. Having that knowledge already from the previous freshman seminar session, it made the assignment much easier. I also used the laptop rentals on days when I did not bring my own, but my favorite place to go study is the computer lab.

As of now, I have not yet joined a club because my main focus has primarily been schoolwork. Nevertheless, I was recently hired for a job as a teacher assistant at an after school program, which I am excited for. I do hope to join a club perhaps next semester or next year, particularly one that has to do with my major. Currently, my major is marketing and I hope that by joining a club related to marketing I will be able to learn more about it and gain more experience.

From my perspective, community service has always been about helping other people of all backgrounds. Through this project, I was reminded that it is also about caring for the environment and improving the overall quality of life for the community. In the next three years, I see myself having a summer or part time job like I do now, while doing well in my courses. I hope that whatever I am doing, that I would always be serving other people as it is a passion of mine, especially when it comes to helping kids. I also plan to graduate a semester early, so I hope that I would be able to do so by this time in three years.

In my opinion, serving the community means getting involved with other people to promote a safe and healthy environment. It is more than just joining a club or organization and going to all the meetings; it is about actually doing something. I think my role in the Baruch community is to make meaningful connections with people, as well as to advance my career by connecting with others. As a Baruch Scholar, I think my role is to take advantage of the fact that I don’t have to pay for tuition by giving back to Baruch in the best way that I can. That may be by donating to a fundraiser, or helping out administer one. Perhaps I can give back by joining a club and becoming an active member by participating in many activities. Personally, this is something that I realistically see myself doing, which is important to me. I do not want to set unrealistic goals for myself, like trying to become president of a club or whatever; that is something that I both do not want to do, nor see myself pursuing. Is it a way to give back to the Baruch community? Maybe, but do I see myself doing it? Most likely not.

Basically, I want to be able to contribute in the best way that I personally can in order to continue promoting the culture of service that the Honors Program advocates. I am not going to say that I will start my very own club to help stop world hunger because it is not realistic for me. I just hope that whatever type of service I do pursue that it makes a difference in some way shape or form in the Baruch community, even if it is just a small dent.

Growing up with a very large family, I’ve been exposed to many different types of interactions that have helped me shape my own values and beliefs. I’ve learned that everyone always has an opinion on anything that I do, or what anyone else does for that matter. Yet, despite the constant comments coming my way during any family event, I found that it is important to simply ignore the negativity and focus on doing what is best for me, rather than trying to please everyone. Personally, I believe this is a quality that can really help me through college since I see my time at Baruch as a way to figure out what I want to do with my life based on my preferences and choices.

Coming into Baruch, I knew it was not going to be an easy transition. I was prepared for the workload and the long hours I would have to put into studying and doing homework. However, my main goal is that after four years I would have found a career that I truly love and would enjoy pursuing for the rest of my life. For this first semester, I hope to establish a high GPA as well as maintain friendships within the Baruch community. So far, it has been a little difficult getting used to the amount of homework that I have been assigned, but I know that I can manage it. Hopefully this semester closes on a positive note as a way to start off the next four years here at Baruch.
