Journal #1

Journal #1 – Group 3

My name is Cindy Li, and I’m from Orange County in New York. I am currently still 17 years old at the time of this post. Growing up in a suburban neighborhood, I have always yearned to explore and experience the city life.

During my senior year of high school, I obtained an accounting internship located near World Trade Center, and I am beyond grateful to have this experience because it further encouraged me to pursue this field. Other than that, I have not experienced much else but I am hoping to obtain more valuable experiences in the future now that I am settled in the city.

My goals for my first semester is to develop more effective study habits and to maintain a high GPA. The workload is certainly more challenging in college than in high school, so I hope to be able to quickly adapt. My course load this semester, in my opinion, is relatively difficult considering the fact that I am transitioning right from high school and that I am one of the very few, or only, first-year students in most of my classes.

In addition, I am an extremely shy person, but I hope to change that during my time in college and in the future so that I can talk to more people and create connections. Perhaps joining a club or two can help push me to be more outgoing. Nevertheless, I am excited for the upcoming school year, and I have faith in myself that I will be able to achieve my goals. It has been a dream of mine for a while to live in New York City, and now I am finally here.

Thank you for reading!

  1. Cindy, I’m certainly positive that you will do super well this semester even though you’re taking most of your courses with non-first-year students. I also hope you do find time throughout this year to explore all the different areas of the city because there’s so much and I think you’d really enjoy it!

  2. Hello Cindy,
I admire your desire to explore the city life, and can relate to your college experiences.Though I have lived in New York City my whole life, as a relatively new 18 year old adult, I also want to gain more experiences in the city. I can also relate to your college experiences since in my classes I’m also one of the only first year students, and it be quite daunting. I hope you enjoy your college years and the city!

  3. Hi Cindy! I can imagine how difficult being of the only freshmen in a class, especially for a shyer person. I respect how you are taking steps to become more social, and it’s good that you’re dorming too. You’ve definitely experienced more than the rest of us, seeing how you are so ahead in classes and having an accounting internship before your freshman year. I think our goals are pretty similar; let’s achieve them!

  4. Hey Cindy(: I am also kind of shy, I am an introvert. I think going to such a big school in nyc and taking classes with upperclassmen can be extremely intimidating and difficult to build up confidence, but it’s all about baby steps. I think joining a club would be a great idea, have you heard of the club Conversation Partners Program?
