As I am mostly familiar with my residing neighborhood, Bay Ridge, I will be using it for the Linguistic Landscape. Bay Ridge is located in the Southwestern part of Brooklyn and is a great pick for the project as it shows a true New York diversity. With the first Dutch and Norwegian settlers, then came the Irish. Over the last century, Greeks and Italians noticeably influenced the area. From the 2000s, Arabs and other Middle Easterners joined the melting pot.
When walking by the third avenue which is our “lively street”, you can observe a developed service industry continuing for miles with different stores and restaurants one after another. Just in one block you can find Arabic driving school and old bikers’ Irish pub. Throughout the year, the neighborhood also holds cultural festivals that gather everyone in the celebration of one group’s history. Over time, I noticed the similarities among traditions and how easy people connect to, what may seem, other cultures. It will be interesting to show the overlaps as well the differences between the groups.
