Not all scholarships are created by a single donor. For decades, various groups of alumni have joined together to create meaningful and significant scholarships, 14 in all.
Sometimes these group-funded scholarships are the idea of one or two especially engaged alumni. Jerry Pickholz (’53), for example, reached out to his alma mater to spearhead what would become the Norman Darer Class of ’53 Scholarship. “I wanted our 50th reunion anniversary gift to provide a scholarship to however many students we could,” he says. “These scholarships represent our thank-you for the education we received.” He and the College were gratified by his classmates’ generosity: Over $133,000 was raised through the contributions of 92 donors
APO Memorial Scholarship: Ninety members of the Alpha Phi Omega (APO) fraternity spanning three decades started a scholarship fund in 2005 and have raised over $247,000 so far. During Reunion weekend, the APO brothers meet with the new scholarship recipient and catch up with past recipients.
Saxe ’55 Scholarship: Thirteen friends—all members of the Saxe ’55 House Plan—started their scholarship fund in 2005, their 50th reunion year. The scholarship supports one student for two to four years.
