The high-level diplomat, whom Birdsell hailed as “a generous, effective guide and tireless friend of the College,” is far more than that—he’s something of a Baruch super-dad. Five of his six children are alumni: Ivanna (’98), Juan (’01), Sara (’02), Bettina (’04), and David (MBA ’05).

In August School of Public Affairs Dean David Birdsell made a weeklong trip to Buenos Aires during which he met with key government officials and administrators at the University of Buenos Aires, Universidad Argentina de la Empresa (UADE), the National University of La Plata, and the National University of Tres de Febrero.

The purpose of the Argentina trip: to expand opportunities for international collaboration for Baruch students and faculty. Among the various initiatives discussed was a master’s degree in international affairs under development at Baruch. The proposed program, to be housed within the School of Public Affairs with programming from all three of Baruch’s schools, is slated to offer tracks in trade policy and global economic governance, international nongovernmental organizations, and hemispheric affairs.

Jeffrey Peck, Baruch’s vice provost for global strategies and dean of the George and Mildred Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, put the trip in the context of the College’s larger institutional goals, saying, “The College is committed to making a global perspective central to the Baruch experience. Our strategic international initiatives, for example, in Brazil and Argentina, not only build links to the cultural diversity of our students and faculty but also encourage the global perspective on world affairs necessary for our students’ education and careers.”
