Jon Li Outline

Hook: Feeling stressed out during this quarantine that we are having right now? How much longer will this quarantine last?

Statement of problem/debate: During this pandemic quarantine is the first opinion that was taken to prevent the spread of the disease, it has been a year now there is still no actual cure to this disease. Quarantine is not a long term solution to counter this pandemic, many health issues and economic stress has been brought to many families.

Thesis: Quarantine is not a long term solution to the pandemic.

Subargument 1: Quarantine leading to obesity

Support 1: “due to the anxiety caused by the hypothesis of a future food shortage, people buy large quantities of packaged and long-lasting food rather than fresh food. Foods with a long shelf life have a high content of salt, sugar or trans fats which increases the risk of obesity.”

Support 2: “One of the consequences of quarantine stress is a change in lifestyle and eating habits reported that stress-related eating (defined as trying to make oneself feel better by eating or drinking in a stressful situation) was significantly associated with obesity, mainly in women. There may be a gender-specific response to stress in which women are more likely to use food to deal with stress, whereas men are more likely to use other oral behaviors such as alcohol consumption or smoking as strategies to cope with stress”

Support 3:It is well known that obesity is associated to a chronic, sterile, low-grade inflammation which contributes to the activation of atherosclerothic plaques, making patients affected by obesity more vulnerable to cardiovascular events. Inflammatory markers were seen to increase by short-term as well as long-term stress.

Subargument 2: Psychological impact of quarantine

Support 1:Three studies showed that longer durations of quarantine were associated with poorer mental health specifically, post-traumatic stress symptoms, avoidance behaviours, and anger.Although the duration of the quarantine was not always clear, one study showed that those quarantined for more than 10 days showed significantly higher post-traumatic stress symptoms than those quarantined for less than 10 days.

Support 2: Participants in eight studies reported fears about their own health or fears of infecting others and were more likely to fear infecting family members than those not quarantined. They also became particularly worried if they experienced any physical symptoms potentially related to the infection and fear that the symptoms could reflect having the infection continued to be related to psychological outcomes several months later.

Support 3: Confinement, loss of usual routine, and reduced social and physical contact with others were frequently shown to cause boredom, frustration, and a sense of isolation from the rest of the world, which was distressing to participants.

Subargument 3: Financial crisis caused by quarantine

Support 1: In the reviewed studies, the financial loss as a result of quarantine created serious socio economic distress and was found to be a risk factor for symptoms of psychological disorders and both anger and anxiety several months after quarantine.

Support 2: Foundation and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, surveyed around 3,500 respondents nationwide in July and early August and found that nearly half of American households faced lost jobs or pay cuts during the pandemic.

Support 3: Potentially related to financial loss, participants with a combined annual household income of less than CAN$40 000 showed significantly higher amounts of post-traumatic stress and depressive symptoms.

Subargument: Isolation caused by quarantine

Support 1: These social distancing efforts have led to remote working; remote or online education; cancellation of sporting, entertainment, and professional events; and, closures of museums, parks, churches and much more.

Support 2: Dissociating is a natural response to high stress situations (especially trauma) and exists on a spectrum.

Support 3: Being lonely has several adverse impacts on mental health. Reduced time in bed spent asleep (7% reduced sleep efficiency) and increased wake time after sleep onset have been related to loneliness

In conclusion, quarantine might be a great way to stop the spread of covid-19 but it is not the long term solution to the pandemic, it caused many issues like obesity, isolation, financial crisis, as well as mental impact. It is a better solution that the government should put in more effect to find the cure to the disease so that the stressor would be gone and our society could go back to the way they were.

Jon Li Marvel

The author Martin Scorsese in his argument points out many points on how Marvel is not considered a cinema or is not worth its fame in a sense. One of the author’s points is that there is just no opportunity given to other movies on the big screen other than franchise movies. It was stated in his article that “you might argue, can’t they just go home and watch anything else they want on Netflix or iTunes or Hulu? Sure — anywhere but on the big screen, where the filmmaker intended her or his picture to be seen.” This quote gives off a sense of broken pride and jealousy because he also made a movie called “ The Irishman” as stated in the text and wanted to be in the theater longer since it sorta a symbol of acceptance and accomplishment as a producer. His argument is just not valid with that mindset, marvel does not produce low quality movies, it is a series of movies that build off with approval. Marvel did not become what it is today without hardship and not all movies were all successful at first, but over time it got better and became what it is today. His point is just too biased based, his movie “The Irishman” was a huge hit as well rating really high in rotten tomato beating avenger endgame. It’s not like his movies were bad, it ‘s just that his pride as a director seems to have made him think that Marvel series is not considered cinema. Franchises can die anytime if it weren’t good, which means marvel does produce movies that worth its name.

Another point that the author made is that he thinks of marvel movies as just movies with spectacular effects and predictable story-line. I myself like special effects. This is not biased, we just generally like these effects like fireworks. It just attracts us, supernatural being included in this element makes things more attractive since it is something we don’t have but wish to have, it just makes a movie attractive in its own way. The second part of his point on how the marvel story-line is generic and does not see any development on an emotional level with the character. According to a reporter that responded to Martin Scorsese’s post stated that “the Marvel movies follow a solid story-line that provides a clear indication of emotional experiences. For example, the underlying theme in “Infinity War” into “Endgame” is man versus self. As each hero addresses their lack in ability to cope with loss, much as any human does, they also struggle with inner obstacles.” Marvel is a connected story-line through a series of movies, it’s characters have been developed for a long time, it is true that a single movie there might be a lack of character development but that cause many of them have been already developed just that it is not in a single movie. Being a franchise many of its viewers have seen many of marvel individual movies of character, we got an understanding already and that many are connected to each individual character. Cinema means something that brings entertainment to the audience and marvel does that part well. The author stated that Marvel is a theme park, that not bad if it brings joy to people, it is not something bad. Overall Martin Scoresse point of view is based on his own ideal as a director and creator, which is a biased view. If Martin Scoresse had watched all of the marvel movies up until now he might get a better understanding of each movie.

Jon Li Synthesis Letter

Topic: How quarantine affects our health.

Research Question:

  1. How does quarantine affect physical health?
  2. How does quarantine affect mental health?
  3. How does no exercise affect your health?

Dear Professor,

During my research I came across a lot of resource that I could use, it was hard to choose among them since at first my topic was just about “how quarantine affect physical health” but I gradually realize it was too hard since not many reliable source is out there since there not much incident that is about quarantine. As a result I expanded my topic to how it affects our health which made the whole thing much easier to find more sources. The possession was helpful since I was learning about my topic and was able to adapt to make things better since the topic is more recent and there is less information on it.

My first source CDC(2019) introduced how physical activities are important to the human body. It later branched out on how being physically inactive will lead to many problems like heart disease and diabetes. They also benefit from being physically active during everyday lives. This source might be a bit off my topic and I believe so but it introduces the point of importance of physical activities. My second source is from Mattioli(2020), it talked about how during quarantine we are less likely to be physically active since there are not many ways to be physically active at home leading to cardiovascular disease. Unhealthy diet is also introduced along the process since many store products are limited because of  manufacturers unable to provide enough product contributing to more physical problems. My third is from Dr. Dawn-Elise Snipes(2020) is a professional therapist that does study on psychological health, she talks a lot about how fear and lack of information has a direct effect of the quarantine. Fear brings stress to a person leading to a higher chance of mental illness. Lack of information is also related to fear in sort of a way since she talked about if the government misleads information to the public it would bring fear to the citizen since unknown is a scary factor. Source 4 (Doyle 2021, March 04) was an example of how a student being quarantined was being extremely stressed out and lonely during his time of quarantine. This was meant to be an example of how quarantine can change a person and the mental damage it can cause to a student. Hansen was the student being in this source, he was lonely and was not able to concentrate on what he was doing.

After reading these sources I further understand how quarantine impacts our health. Now I understand the effects of quarantine, it brings fear, isolation, and insufficient physical activity. These factors will affect both our mental and physical health. There is still a lot that I need to find in order to have a better outcome since the topic is still a bit hard since it is something that is recent so things are a bit complicated to write. I believe that using these sources I will be able to write a clear fact that quarantine is not something great since we are social creatures and we need to interact with each other and move in the outside world.

Sincerely

Jon Li

Topic: My topic is about how quarantine affects our physical health. I chose this topic because I went to the doctor one time and they told me that staying at home in a constant environment makes your body adapt to the environment making your body get used to the environment as a result your body will generally become weakened and relax. It sorta the same thing as exercising, when you exercise generally your skin might have damage and new skin is formed that is hard but if you don’t your skin is soft and easy to be damaged.

Research Question:

1.how does no exercise affect your health [Be careful about research questions like this one. There are some pretty obvious answers to this question. Remember, a good research question shouldn’t have obvious answers]

2.how does quarantine affect physical health

Mattioli, A., Puviani, M., Nasi, M., & Farinetti, A. (2020, May 05). COVID-19 Pandemic: The effects of quarantine on cardiovascular risk. Retrieved March 12, 2021, from https://www.nature.com/articles/s41430-020-0646-z

Summary

Covid-19 being a global pandemic brought the whole world into chaos, and the government issued a quarantine to prevent any further spread of the disease and many manufacturers are in some trouble as well. As a result, the consequence of being quarantined is the lack of physical activity and an unhealthy diet. Research has shown that an adult needs to be engaged in about 75-150 minutes of exercise per week to avoid any risk of physical failure. This promotes more home-based physical activity and a healthy diet along it. Quarantine might be a safe option to avoid Covid-19, but it also brought along a different kind of danger that includes cardiovascular disease that is mainly related to unhealthy lifestyle and stress. That being said without physical activity there is also weight gain and during this time of crisis unhealthy diet is much more common cause many manufacturers are being limited in this time of need. [What is the connection between manufacturers being closed/limited and the health effects of quarantine? Are people who worked for manufacturers a higher risk?]

Reflection

The type of article is hard to find and I would say this article is qualified and does meet my needs. [If you are having a hard time finding sources about the impact of quarantine on physical health, you might want to consider narrowing your focus or looking for sources that explore similar topics and then using your analysis skills to show the connections.] Physical effect by the quarantine is not often to be seen as so very little information could be found, I would say that the article is quite reliable since it has many citations. The format of the article is very scholarly, making it a reliable article to be chosen. I would say the lack of exercise is very dangerous since I would say I am a victim of it too, quarantine really brought a lot of physical strain on me and I would say the article explains quite well the aspect that there is a lack of home-based activity to be done and I would say the diet I am having right now is the same which does not comply with the situation we are in. Not being able to go out strains our body even though we are not moving and relaxing indoors. Constantly being quarantined really needs to make us think about what is there to do to help maintain a healthy lifestyle. [It might be a good idea to research how to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle even though we are stuck inside most of the time.]

Quote

“During quarantine, we must promote physical activity at home. Little information is available on the effects of home-based physical activity on chronic disease.”

I chose this quote because this is true, with this whole pandemic going not a whole lot of people initially thought that being contained at home was a bad thing. Many disregard the lack of physical activity aspect since I was a student never had a problem with that when I was going to school. The walking process has always been my way of trying to exercise and to stay healthy but in an enclosed environment in our home, we don’t really think about it.

Lack of physical activity. (2019, September 25). Retrieved March 12, 2021, from https://www.cdc.gov/chronicdisease/resources/publications/factsheets/physical-activity.htm

Summary

Not getting enough physical activity contributes to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, several cancers, and obesity. Also, these health problems lead to paid medical treatment that has reached 117 billion. People in any age range can benefit from more physical activity, including aerobic and muscle-strengthening exercises. Physical activity contributes to growth and development in children and reduces the risk of several chronic diseases, and helps us function better throughout the day and sleep better at night. Many people want to get regular physical activity but there is a lack of places to do these exercises for some communities. There are no places for people of all ages and disabilities to be active in. There are many programs out there that want to help us reach the amount of exercise we need to stay healthy, these include the Workplace Health Promotion Program and Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model. [Since this source is a fact sheet, it would probably give you some useful background information for your essay’s introduction section.]

Reflection

Physical activity might not be for everyone since there are cases that some do not have a place to work out or are capable of doing physical activity. I would say that as a person that doesn’t like exercise I should start someday since it will improve our daily life. Getting exercise into our life will later generally become a habit and there are programs out there that can help us achieve this goal of keeping ourselves healthy and make a habit of it. In time as this pandemic, we are in it even more important to keep up with the exercise to help stay in shape and to have a better day. As mentioned in this text that many health problems contribute to lack of exercise which many should know the risk they are taking to not do any form of physical activity to keep themself in healthy condition. [You make some good points here, but I think most people are aware of the importance of exercising. Remember, we will use our research to write an argument essay in the next unit. Make sure you are thinking about how your sources can help you make an argument about your topic. Also, take into consideration the current time and place in which you are writing (rhetorical situation). As the pandemic begins to end, how important will it be for people to think about exercising at home? Or, are you going to make the case that people’s exercise habits will change as a result of the pandemic? Do you think more people will exercise at home even after gyms reopen?]

Quote

“These lifestyle changes can cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by as much as 58% (71% for those over 60).”

The statistical data this quote provides for me shows how impactful being physically active is and to keep us in shape to live longer or giving us a better immune system.

Jon Li

Hello guys my name is Jon LI, I am from an Asian culture and I was born here in the U.S, I have here for the most part of my life. I am still not sure what my future career going to be, but I am trying to see if finance going to work out for me.

There not much I could talk about myself, if there is anything I would say that in the future I would like to visit Japan someday, I really want to try out the ramen in Japan since that my favorite food. I like going out at night to the park during summer when there not that much people and not so hot outside, the nightly calm really is refreshing and I like taking a walk that way.
