Writing 2150t: Spring 2021

Zaining

Hi, everyone!

I am very happy to meet you in this class in the new semester. I’ll take a moment to introduce myself.

My name is Sun Zaining. I am 20 years old. I am an international student from China. When I was about seventeen, I chose to study in the United States. I came to the United States to study because I wanted to see the outside world. I have been here for three years now. I am glad that I knew nothing about everything from the beginning, and now I am looking forward to life in university.

In my free time, I like to do yoga to relax myself. Although I don’t know how to do many and difficult moves, I remember an important point, persist. As long as you persist, you can exercise your body in simple movements.

In the end, I am very happy that I was admitted to Baruch College. I hope I can learn new knowledge and meet new friends in the university life of Baruch College.

Yuting Chen

Hello, everyone. My name is Yuting. I was born in China. My intended major is finance. I live in Staten Island. I worked as a summer camp counselor when I was in high school. I also enrolled in Summer Youth Employment Program last summer remotely. I am currently working for Baruch Undergraduate Admission as a part time job.

In my free time, I love watching TV and cook ( mostly Chinese food). I am learning to bake. My mom likes to cook and bake different stuffs. My mom taught me how to make cake long time ago, but I forget everything haha. My mom made this cake, I was helping her.

One wonderful experience I had with my friend and her family was we went snow tubing in New Jersy. It was so beautiful. We also went to eat hotpot afterwards. I am looking forward to know all of you and hopefully we will learn from each other and know each other better!

Derek

Hi all!

Now that I’ve had the opportunity to virtually meet all of you on Zoom, I thought I’d take the time to properly introduce myself.

Derek standing in a grove of pine treesI have been living in New York City (on and off) for the past 16 years. I completed both my undergraduate and my graduate studies at a school called The New School where I majored in Cultural and Media Studies for my BA and Applied Linguistics for my MA.

I’ve just completed my first year teaching at Baruch (yay!), and I’ve been teaching English in some capacity for almost 10 years. My teaching career began as an elementary school English teacher in Daegu, South Korea, where I lived from 2012-2014. After that, I spent a few months traveling around Asia. After returning to New York City, I worked part-time at a media company for 2 years. Here, I produced content for the company’s social media outlets. At the same time, I began to teach ESL to adults at a private language school in Manhattan, (my office was on the 63rd floor of the Empire State Building!). After completing my Masters, I began teaching at several colleges and universities in New York City. In fact, I have taught in 4 of the 5 boroughs (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx). This is my third term teaching fully online and I am excited about sharing a new teaching and learning experience with all of you.

In my free time I like to ride my bike, go hiking/birdwatching, and experiment with new recipes (I’m not a great cook, though–much better at eating). Last summer, I also took an online class about tree identification, planting, and pruning. One day, I’m hoping to volunteer with city parks so that I can help take care of the trees. I also love old school JRPGs (think PS1–yeah, I guess I’m old). I don’t have a lot of free time to play them anymore, but I’m currently working on Final Fantasy IX.

My goals for this course are to help each of you improve individually while also maintaining a strong sense of community within our new classroom environment. Collaboration, discussion, teamwork, and creativity are just a few of the qualities I find most important for building a solid foundation for undergraduate course work.

Finally, I have an “open door policy,” which means that you should never feel afraid or ashamed to contact me if you have any questions. I’m very much looking forward to working with all of you this semester.

Julison Yan

Hello, everyone,

It is my pleasure to introduce myself. My name is Julison Yan, borned and raised in China as an international student who came here around two years ago, and I currently live in the lower east side of Manhattan there is a little story behind my name, my mom was going to name me Jason, but later she thought that there are a lot of people who named Jason, so she decided to name me something special l, and she picked just some random alphabets instead of A. Finally, the name Julison comes out of her mind and sounds perfect to her. That is where my name came from.

Since I had only been here for a couple of years, my English speaking skills and my accents are horrible. I love reading novels and watching movies or documentaries about criminology like Jack the Ripper murders. I am a freshman at Baruch College, and my intended major is accounting. Business is a perfect choice for me, and this is the fastest way to achieve my goal: Be RICH!!! I chose Baruch college for many reasons. 1. Baruch College belongs to the CUNY system which means it is the most affordable college among the colleges that I am accepted to. 2. The Zicklin School of Business is the largest collegiate school of business in the nation and the only CUNY school that offers business programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, representing the highest standard of achievement for business schools worldwide. In other words, Zicklin school of business is one of the most reputable schools in the United State, and  Zicklin’s Full-Time Honors MBA Program attracts students from some of the most competitive universities in the nation. More than that, Baruch college has a career center and tools for clear speech which can help non-native English speakers like me. I hope you guys get to know more about me after my introduction. And I really we can be the best friends at Baruch college in the next couple of years or even after our college graduation. Maybe we can grab some food and drink bubble tea together after quarantine.
