Homework: Scorcese on Marvel (Due 4/9)
A few years ago, academy award winning filmmaker Martin Scorcese was asked to share his thoughts on Marvel movies. His response “I don’t think they’re cinema” generated backlash from some and sparked heated debates with others. A few months later, he clarified his comments in an opinion piece for the New York Times. For your homework, please follow the directions below:
-
- First, read the NYT opinion piece at least two times. Make notes of the author’s main idea, major claims, supporting evidence, counter-arguments, etc.
- Then, use your notes to write a response that defends Marvel movies. Your response should do the following:
- Be at least 500 words (1 page) and single-spaced
- Address at least two specific claims that the author makes and offer a different perspective from the one presented in the piece. You should support your own claims with evidence.
- Remember: You are not writing an opinion piece. You are responding to one. Therefore, you should try to avoid reducing your argument to simple “agree/disagree” statements and examples. Instead, challenge the author’s major claims directly so that your readers know you are a credible source of information on this topic.
- After you proofread your response, post it to the course website by creating a new post and selecting the “Marvel” category. I encourage you to read what some of your classmates post and leave comments if you feel inspired to do so. If you have forgotten how to post to the course website, you can follow this guide. Just make sure you only select the “Marvel” category before you publish your work. For this assignment, you do not need to leave a comment below with the link t your post.
