From YouTube via Midwest National Parks and StoryCorps: The only remaining western town established by African Americans during the Reconstruction Period following the Civil War, the town of Nicodemus is symbolic of the pioneer spirit of African Americans who dared to leave the only region they had been familiar with to seek personal freedom and the opportunity to develop their talents and capabilities. In partnership with StoryCorps, the Midwest Region of the National Park Service is celebrating the NPS Centennial through sharing and preserving our favorite park memories. The project celebrates the diversity of parks site in the region and demonstrates why these places have captivated Americans through first-hand, personal stories. The latest story sees Barbara Christian and Thomas Wellington share memories and stories about Nicodemus.
