The topic I will be choosing for my research-based argument essay is that of the anti-Trump sentiment in today’s time. The anti-Trump sentiment is extremely characteristic of our time. Due to the policies that he has enacted, and to the statements he has made dating back to his 2016 campaign for president, large swaths of the American population have a highly unfavorable view of President Trump. His approval ratings are below and among the lowest of U.S Presidents dating back to Harry S. Truman in 1945. The coverage from the media surrounding President Trump is overwhelmingly negative with some studies showing 92% of his coverage being negative. This is lower than any of the recent U.S presidents. Whether it is merited or not, it is clear that the majority of press outlets do not view President Trump favorably. In addition to this, President Trump seems to always be in the news, perhaps even more than other presidents. If this is not the case, this is certainly the perception held by many. The discourse surrounding President Trump goes beyond the media however. The public is constantly talking about his antics, comments, and actions which range from his personal character to his policy agenda. In fact, the way in which the discourse surrounds President Trump is unique in other ways as well. According to studies, 69% of news coverage about President Trump is about his leadership and character rather than his policy substance. This is significantly higher than that of previous presidents and helps shapes the discourse held around President Trump. In addition to this, the discourse around President Trump has caused civil unrest in the form of protests and a general sense of polarization among the population. The Women’s March in 2017, held the day after President Trump’s inauguration, was a gathering of millions of people who in large part were protesting against President Trump.
