MIDTERM ASSIGNMENT DUE: MONDAY, MARCH 19

By the above date, all students must have completed the following work:

–Created a blog using Blogs@Baruch, including the name of the blog in the URL. You might want to include a unique header image/logo graphic that reflects the character of the blog and includes the name of the blog and a cutline. (USE YOUR OWN PHOTOGRAPHS. DO NOT TAKE IMAGE FROM ANOTHER SITE TO ILLUSTRATE YOURS.)

–Created an “About” page (Condensed version of mission statement, aim for 200 words.) This page should be added to your main menu. (10 points)

–Published FIVE posts to your blog. Each should include a thoughtful headline that accurately reflects the post (consider that it must stand alone on social media) and include hyperlinks. Also make sure posts are showing up clearly on your homepage (For example, adding “more” tag so only first paragraph is showing on homepage and not the entire post.)

Here is what the posts must be:

  1. Reported post no. 1: I will be sending editing notes that you should all receive by Friday, March 9. Please rewrite your posts, taking into account my comments, and repost them on your blogs. (15 points)
    2. Prototype of a reoccurring feature: For this post, you will create a feature that can be used as the basis for reoccurring posts. For example, for a music site, you might do, “Artist of the Week,” with a photo, write-up and music clip. Same thing could be done for a fashion-related blog, “Look of the Week,” showcasing interesting street fashion and an interview with the person explaining his or her fashion choices. For a politics-related blog, you might do a “Hot Topic” post in which you explain an issue and where candidates stand. Be creative. At least one interview with a person is required for this post. (15 points)
    3. Service post: This post will include advice or information that readers can use. This post can take many forms. It might be a reported post with interviews about how to do something. (I.e., how New Yorkers are working to lower their trash output, or how philosophy can help lower stress) Or, it could be a list – 8 Ways to get your child involved in sports, or, 7 Things about the Dream Act You Didn’t Know. IMPORTANT: Even lists, like the ones I suggested, should incorporate serious research and maybe even an interview with an expert. (15 points)
    4. 2 “In The News” roundups: This requirement includes the aggregation post that we worked on in class and one additional aggregation post that you create on your own. (20 points)

–Created four categories for your blog and tagged your posts appropriately and added them to your blog’s main menu. (10 points)

-Prepared to present blogs to class on Monday, March 19. Each student will get about five minutes (15 points)

–Added a post to our class blog with the URL of your individual blog by class on Monday, March 19. (FOR THIS CLASS, PLEASE CHANGE THE PRIVACY SETTINGS ON YOUR BLOG TO PUBLIC SO WE CAN EASILY VIEW THEM DURING CLASS.)

OUR CLASS ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14 WILL BE A PRODUCTION CLASS. YOU CAN USE TIME IN CLASS TO POST STORIES AND GET HELP FROM ME ON TECHNICAL QUESTIONS. I’LL ALSO BE AVAILABLE IN MY OFFICE ON MONDAY, MARCH 19 FROM 2-4PM TO OFFER LAST-MINUTE HELP.

This assignment is all about attention to detail. Make sure everything in this assignment has been completed, and carefully edit your posts before publishing. Do not wait until the last minute to begin work on this midterm. You will need to pace yourself so that you get all the work done.
