Oral History Project ~ Angelynn Moya

This catija was created to represent the culture that was talked about in the interview.

This is the letter I wrote to the person I interviewed:

Dear Nyla,

I hope everything is going well. It was a pleasure interviewing you on your very cherished bracelet given to you by your grandmother. I myself have jewelry that I have had since a baby and hearing someone else’s story and history behind it was truly amazing. I really found the lesson that you wanted for people to learn from listening to this interview was really good, which was that people should learn before judging someone and before using or wearing something that has a lot of meaning especially in cultures. Especially for now that anything that people do in social media is popular and anything that a celebrity/influencer wears they want. Also learning about the different traditions your puerto rican culture has such as the coconut and white candle during new years to cleanse was very interesting.

This oral history not only honors your legacy but also it honors the legacy of others who might have similar traditions as well like your family or anybody who can relate. It honors it by explaining some of the meaning behind it and how impactful it is to the community who might use it like in yours which is the Puerto Rican community and other communities like the caribbean and latin community. I will say that getting the interview started was a bit of struggle because when we think about interviews we think about being serious and not joking around but at the beginning we had to restart a couple of times because it was just giggles and laughs. Once we actually started though it kept us moving even though I had to make up a lot of questions as we kept going but I think it was good since some will be questions that will explain what probably wasn’t explained or mentioned in the beginning.

Overall though I think we both can agree that people should learn about what they could be wearing or what they are doing that could be very significant and meaningful to someone else. People will really appreciate it if you know what you are wearing or what you are doing instead of  just knowing that it is aesthetically pleasing, cute or popular. Of course though influencers/celebrities have a fault in why people don’t know what they are actually wearing.

Thank you again.

Sincerely,

Angelynn Moya
