Letters From Cuba

Maria Irene Fornes Letters from Cuba shows that it incorporates letters as a form of communication, and in turn because of the lack of action of the play it focuses on the internal struggles between the significance of the letters The letters are of the brother and has. Purpose, The purpose of the letters are to show how he’s feeling, addressing how Fran is absent from his life. His struggles to join her but doesn’t want to leave Cuba. Marc wrote of a poem of the brother and it shows how sad it felt, since it felt distant since the whole play deals with a lot of loss in a long distance sort of way. The letters very much show how much the Characters of Fran and Luis is, Fran is the U.S.A from my understanding she does not read one single of the letters which shows her different way of living and connection compared to Luis. Luis struggles as he wants to be with her but can’t because of his attachment to Cuba, and he writes note after note to Fran showing his strong way of connection compared to Fran. As sad and very separating the play goes through in the end it is met with connection.

In the beginning of scene 4 you can see how Fran seems to live her life as the brothers letter dialogs her “Luis reads a letter in Cuba. FRAN seems to hear his voice and gazes at him through the stage left window. After a few lines of the letter she exits through the bedroom door.” These lines show the separation and bliss of Fran when she is living in the US. Her Brother still connects with her through letters and still sends these letters in hopes she is reading them and this helps her remember her home. This shows a lot of creativity because the letters are the action of the play. Letters show having Luis be in this state of desperation with connection is what makes this play interesting. Having each letter go by as he wonders if Fran is reading but only the viewer knows if she did or not. They both want to see each other but in the play it shows that they see each other spiritually which is kinda sweet and sad at the same time.

Letters from Cuba shows how much emotion a play can bring and tell just by the viewer having knowledge of how both characters’ connections can be inseparable and hoping for them to have a reunion.
