Final Assignment: Reflection

During this semester, we spent seven minutes at the beginning of every class doing freewrites, and the professor let us write down anything we wanted to say. At first, I didn’t quite understand why we needed to do the freewrites. However, the recent assignment made me understand the importance of writing these freewrites. Each student needs to observe their own grammar, sentence structure, and coherence changing over time. At the same time, understand the changes in yourself. This is the purpose of freewriting for 7 minutes of class.

First of all, I think that in terms of grammar, my biggest progress includes the past and present tense. Although there are still many problems with my grammar, I began to observe my own changes. For example, on December 6th, I described a story about my conversation with my mother in the past. In the freewrite, I wrote: “I told my mom.” In the sentence, “told” is past tense, proving that it is not a story that is happening now. If it is a story that happens now, I will use “tell” because it is the current time. I never paid attention to this when I wrote first freewrites, because I thought these details were not important. In fact, past and present tense represents the change of time. At this point I began to realize the importance of grammar.

Second, I am making progress in the structure of the sentence. In the beginning, I often used simple sentences. For example, on September 4th, I wrote: “I didn’t do many things this weekend. I didn’t do my work…I didn’t motivate myself.” So, I often started with “I” in the freewrite.  As time went by, I gradually reduced the frequency of using “I” as the beginning of the sentence. For example, on December 4th I wrote: “The new things that I learned about myself this semester is to communicate and learn about non – violence communication.” In order to avoid frequent use of simple sentences, I used relative clauses here, which consist of an independent clause and relative clause.

Third, coherence refers here to whether I can follow the ideas in here. In every freewrites, I noticed that I could not follow my own thoughts and ideas. For example, on December 6th, the professor asked us to write about the theme: How was it different this time? I wrote in the freewrite: “This day I feel very tired and stress, I didn’t get enough sleep for myself…Everyday when I get home is to do my homework all day long…It is very very difficult To balance school and life.” In the process, I couldn’t write the right answer according to the given theme, because my thoughts are dominated by my feelings. Until now, I have still not been able to completely link my ideas with the themes.

At the end of the semester, these freewrites taught me how to have the ability to communicate and express my own feelings. For example, on December 6th I mentioned: “powerless…anxiety…stress.” Although these words are not very positive words, I was amazed at the words I used in the sentence. Before that, I only know how to use happy and sad. However, through the process of learning English. I have learned more words that help me to better express my feelings. So that others can more clearly understand my thoughts. These are all my harvests.

Lee, Jin-Soo, et al. “Examining the Role of Emotional and Functional Values in Festival Evaluation.” Journal of Travel Research, vol. 50, no. 6, Nov. 2011, pp. 685–696, doi:10.1177/0047287510385465.

Summary

The research paper “Examining the Role of Emotional and Functional Values in Festival Evaluation” begins with talking about community. The festival can promote the local economy, attract social cohesion and strengthen a destination image for the community. Hosting a festival can play a vital role in the community and help more people to understand the destination’s culture, traditions, and racial background. The research aimed to explore the motivation behind the participation of festival visitors and determined how visitors’ values affect their own behavioral intentions and satisfaction levels. Others think that the reason why visitors are willing to participate in the festival was that their “functional value”, but the authors reveal that “functional value” was a one-dimensional value, it’s too simple and narrow. Therefore, it can not reflect a broader and richer vision of the festival. This is also the reason why “functional value” is easy to be misused in different ways. Multi-dimensions include: “functional value” and “emotional value.” The authors claim that multi-dimension is the roots to attract visitors to participate in the festival. Only the existence of both “functional value” and “emotional value” can attract visitors. These two values can bring a huge contribution to visitor’s behavioral intentions and satisfaction levels. They led more visitors to participate in different community festivals and it helps the festival organizer to understand visitor’s opinions, in order to better manage and design festivals.

In the research, the authors investigate the values of visitors and the consequences of these values. They think the value was the media between festival quality and satisfaction level. The authors mainly focus on the “functional value” and “emotional value.” “Functional value” is “utilitarian” value. “Utilitarian” value is the trade-off between quality and benefit. It ignores the dimensions of people’s inner thoughts and emotions, but it includes products, services, and facilities. “Emotional value” is “hedonic” value. Through satisfying human being’s needs to gain trust and loyalty, it includes natural environment, social opportunities, and cultural experiences. The study predicts the “festival quality dimensions” connects with emotional and functional value, an Emotional value is positive affects visitors’ “satisfaction levels” or “behavioral intention” than functional value and visitor satisfaction is also strongly connect to behavioral intentions. In the research and investigation process, the authors finally conclude that functional value and emotional value are essential, but compared “functional value” to “emotional value,” which tends to affect visitors’ behavioral intentions and satisfaction levels to participate in festivals.

Analysis

“According to the organizing committee of the Boryeong Mud Festival (2009), 2067000 domestic visitors (95.2%) and 104000 international visitors(4.8%) participate in the 12th Boryeong Mud Festival …  Thus an on-site intercept survey was conducted for individual domestic visitors by 10 well-trained students from the Department of Hotel and Tourism Management at a university in Seoul… Emotional and functional values, satisfaction, behavioral intention were employed using 5-point Likert-type scales ranging from strongly disagree (5) to strongly agree(1)” (Lee et al.. 689).  In other words, “intercept survey” would be the way to evaluate the motivation behind visitors’ participation. Trainers used a range of scale to understand people’s value, behavior, and satisfaction to get a representative sample, The survey was conducted during the entire festival, the festival including both weekdays and weekends so that the data could represent a large range of visitors who had participated in the festival. In order to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data, the researchers sought the opinions of different visitors and provided the diversity of research.

“The respondents were 46% (male) and 54% (female) in this study. They were mostly bachelor’s degree holders (65%), followed by two-year college degree holders (21%). The most prevalent respondent age category was 20 to 9 years (45%), followed by 30 to 39 years (25%) and 40 to 49 years (16%).”  (Lee et al.. 689). According to the proportion of the respondents surveyed, research shows that active festivals are more attractive to young people, so respondents are generally single with higher degree.

“The measure for quality was developed in accordance with the context of the Mud Festival… because they significantly influence visitors’ motives for visiting the festival.” The measure includes several factors: “Festival Program (FPR), Informational Service (IS),  Festival Product (FP), Convenient Facilities (CF), Natural Environment (NE), Functional Value (FV), Emotional Value (EV), Visitor Satisfaction (VS), Behavioral Intentions (BI).” (Lee et al.. 691). : “Festival Program (FPR), Informational Service (IS), Festival Product (FP), Convenient Facilities (CF), Natural Environment (NE), Functional Value (FV), Emotional Value (EV), Visitor Satisfaction (VS), Behavioral Intentions (BI).” Such as the program was interesting, the services were well prepared(functional value) and the festival area has a beautiful park, the factors are included in these questions, these factors adopted for emotional value and functional value. After the collect all the data from visitors. Therefore, after we collect all the data, “…the explained result (Figure 2) shows 60% for functional value, 61% for emotional value.” (Lee et al.. 691). They found both functional and emotional value play a significant role in the festival, but emotional value is higher than functional value. It also tests the link between the quality of the festival and the value of the festival. Values-led people to participate in the festival and event, positively affected “visitors satisfaction levels (72% ) and behavioral intentions(69%).”(Lee et al.. 691). The findings indicate multidimensional values can benefit festival organizers in budgeting for their festivals.

Review

The research paper was a success at achieving the author’s main points. The “festival quality dimensions” connect with emotional and functional value. The emotional value positively affects visitor’s “satisfaction levels” or “behavioral intention” than functional value. The authors’ think both values are important such that, the visitor satisfaction are strongly connected to behavioral intentions and emotional values contribute more to the satisfaction and behaviors of visitors.

However, the researchers have shown that emotional value occupies more weights in the festival, but it does not provide the ways to increase emotional value. For example, how does a festival organizer understand the emotions of a visitor during a festival? How does the festival organizers design a festival to attract people? The best solution is to make a survey to improve the festival, surveys can help festival organizer to focus more on the natural environment and spend more money on developing the event and program of the environment, thus people can better manage and design festivals.

The existence of festival celebration creates communities into a well economic development society. Hosting a festival mainly helps strengthen destination image, bring taxes dollars to communities, increasing social interaction between people and support tradition culture spread. However, a holding festival is not easy, grabbing investors attention or interest to participate in a festival is the most important concern, we need to understand the motivation behind festival attendance and examined the relationship between things that encourage people to attend the festival.

The things that encourage individuals to attend the festivals is festival quality, value, satisfaction, behavioral intention). By comparing different quality antecedent of perceived value for the first time and repeat visitors to a festival. In these study research, the author mentions about two types of values that are both inside people’s mind: Emotional Value and Function Value. These values serve as a mediator between festival quality and satisfaction, which allows us to be conscious of motivation people behinds people’s attendee behavior and for better manage festival.

According to Various (1988), Monroe (1990), and Holbrook (1990) argued: “…The concept of value is the unidimensional value (functional value)…” “buyers” perceptions of value represent a trade-off between the quality/benefits they perceive in the product relative to sacrifice they perceive by paying the price.” (p.46). In other words, Monroe claims that only functional value can help to grab people’s attention. Furthermore, Zeithaml (1998) stated: “the customer’s overall assessment of them and what is given…which holds that individuals value as the difference between the utility offered by the product attributes” (p.14).  In other word, individuals values are based on the satisfaction of the product, it is a tradeoff.

However, many people and professional field researchers have misused the concept of the value, they think the value is a trade-off between quality and benefit of products that sacrifice consumer’s view of paying money. Functional value is not the only value to gather people’s attention to attend the festival. According to Sinha and desarbo 1998; Sweeney and Soutar 2001) have claim: “a unidimensional approach is too simplistic and narrow to capture the holistic representation of value… functional value does not capture in intrinsic, emotional dimension…Emotional value is critical in enhancing customer satisfaction and loyalty.” In other word, author augure that value is dimensional, which includes inner voice and emotional values. For example: When you buy a something you want to feel happy, this includes your emotion and feelings.

In fact, functional value and emotional value both have significant impacts on festival program, informational service, festival product, and environment. In order to bring visitors to the festival. We should know the behavior and satisfaction behind visitors view, opinions, and value. The study mainly focuses on how festival invited visitors to bring up the development of the destination and how festival quality and programs examined the relationship among festival, emotion, and satisfaction.

Final Draft of Mid-Autumn Festival

My childhood was one of the most unforgettable times in my life. Since I was little, I lived with my family members. The moment I felt most happiness is when the whole family got together and celebrate Chinese festivals. In China, the four major traditional festivals were the Mid-Autumn Festival, and Dragon Boat Festival, Spring Festival, and Ching Ming Festival. People maybe know more things about the spring festival in China, but I want to give people more details about the Mid-Autumn Festival in China.

Every BaYueShiWu, me and my family sit together on our house’s balcony and watch the moonlight together. That day was called: Mid-Autumn Festival. I still remember that day our house just had a power outage, everything is dark but my heart is bright and warm because my family members all surround me and made me feel safe. We took out the red candle and light the candle to pray that next year we would still be together. I lay on the balcony floor, my grandmother brings a little table, above the table, there’s a lot of food on the top and, obviously, the most important thing is the mooncake. We sit together and listen to the story about the Mid-Autumn Festival. It has been said that, at that time, the gods of the moon (called Chang E) will miss their loved ones and look forward to a reunion. Therefore, every BaYueShiWu, people watch the moon and the moon always seem like a big round circle. It means reunion. Listening to the story told by my parents, gradually, I fell asleep.

The history of the Mid-Autumn Festival, it is a long story to tell. Mid-Autumn Festival began in the early years of the Tang Dynasty and began popular in the Song Dynasty. During that time period, the Mid-Autumn Festival is not about celebrating the reunion of families but it was a festival about commemorating ancestors. This festival were only for the emperor because emperor represents the son of god. When he commemorating ancestors, ancestors will protect him and his people. Later on, ancient nobles and ministers began to follow the emperor. Lastly, nobles and ministers passed this festival into ancient people’s life. However, when the festival passed into people’s life, It became a turning point of the festival, people treated Mid-Autumn Festivals as a festival that celebrates the harvest and expresses joy because they knew after celebrating the Mid- Autumn Festival, the fall season will come soon and fall season was the time for people to collect all their crops and fruits and each family will gather together to collect their own crops. Over the time passes, Mid – Autumn Festivals become a festival celebrating reunion and harvest.

Furthermore, there are many traditional activities in the Mid-Autumn Festival. Such as watching the moon or give the moon a salute and also people will prepare lots of the foods to worship the moon god; guess a riddle (one of the most popular activities people play); eating moon cake; drink Osmanthus wine; create a lantern and hang the lantern on the pole, so when people pass every place and look up, it seems like all the stars shining on the sky. The traditional activities of the Mid-Autumn Festival were deeply loved by people and later became one of the four traditional festivals in China.

In most Chinese people’s minds, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a festival full of joy. It can make many people reunite on this day. It represents good wishes and hopes. Mid-Autumn Festival is not fully popularized in the world. I also hope to pass on this joy and let more people understand the culture of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
