Welcome to Corona Queens Linguistic Landscape- Cesar Martinez

Tag along as I explore the Linguistic landscape of Corona Queens, a neighborhood located in Queens NY. In Corona Queens, Corona is home to the largest Latin American immigrant community in Queens. While Corona has historically been home to various diverse immigrant communities, today its residents are 78% Hispanic or Latino and 15% Asian. Growing up in Queens,  I noticed that the borough itself had a special meaning to me as I grew up,  I realized that around the area, the area itself had specific unique patterns that contributed to its unique distinction, setting it apart from other areas from my own personal heavy analysis of the area. These patterns were present at Roosevelt Ave, a major street in Queens, running through several neighborhoods and stations with small local businesses established within the area.

Among the landscape there was a diverse mix of shoppers and vendors where their businesses had aesthetic appeals such as their signs, logos and its atmosphere. This led me to study the linguistic landscape of Corona by exploring the different themes  located from  the intersection of 103rd Street and Roosevelt Avenue ( Visual 2) . Throughout the blog I will discuss the several unique themes and patterns within my community that display the richness and symbolic cultural appearance of small local businesses that contribute to Corona’s enriched cultural landscape. These unique patterns and themes are the use of bilingual signs, heavy use of font and bold colors, mixture of language of both English and Spanish and the  use of symbols that contribute towards heavy latin culture.
