Grand Central Station Vs PATH Train Station

Grand Central Terminal is more “New York” than the Main Hall of the World Trade Center PATH train station in my opinion. They are both buildings located in NYC that lead into different train lines.

When you walk into the grand central terminal you walk into a big open space with many people. Everyone around you is focused and in a rush to get where they are going, that itself seems very New York. At the PATH station Main Hall there are many stores at the bottom so it has the opposite feeling, people seem like they are taking their time and in less of a rush. When you walk into the PATH station you are hit with an extremely bright light because of the huge windows and also that the whole building is white. I think that in some cases making the whole building white can make it look more modern but in this case it gave me a similar feeling to a doctors office. Compared to the Grand Central terminal which feels more comfortable because of the warm tones in the building.

In conclusion, Grand Central Terminal is better because it  feels like a building you’d see in a movie whereas the PATH station Main Hall seems like a regular mall building on the inside.

The Evolution Of NYC

“Timescapes:A Brief History of NYC” is a short documentary about the history of NYC. They begin at about the time where the Europeans started to settle on the land of modern day NYC. They continue to discuss the evolution of NYC in chunks of 20-100 years at a time. They go through about 400 years in this short film.

In my opinion I think that this was a successful film for what it was. But I think it would have been more fitting to have been called “A Brief History of Manhattan” But I understand why they mainly focused on Manhattan, thirty minutes is not a lot of time to get 400 years of history in, especially for five boroughs. I think they did a good job of taking each section of time and giving a brief summary of the time and how the city looked. They didn’t spend more than two or three minutes on each section but you still understood some of the main things happening in each time period, like the creation of wall street, the subway, and housing.

In conclusion I think that this was a successful short film about the history of Manhattan and how it’s come to look like the way it is, all of the streets, neighborhoods, skyscrapers, etc.

Modernization is Forever

According to Berman, Modernity is being able to be in an environment that can lead to adventure , having power, joy, transformation and growth of ourselves and the world but at the same time is able to destroy everything. Modernity is supposed to be able to unite all of mankind. Giving people the power to change the world that is changing them is considered modernism.

In my opinion I think that our current era is an extension of the modernity discussed in Berman’s Introduction. I think that we will continue to modernize as the years go on. I don’t think that there is a certain “break” in time, we just continue. Some of the characteristics of modernity that apply to our current era are great discoveries in the physical sciences, like the first image of a black hole. Transforming scientific knowledge into technology like artificial intelligence. Challenging their political and economic rulers, and mass social movements of people, this is something we have seen a lot in the past couple of years.

In conclusion our current era is an extension of the modernity that  Berman was talking about in his introduction. Our world is advancing and will continue to advance in technology, science, politics, etc.
