Project Plans

My topic is on animal abuse, specifically I will focus on how animals are being abused through cosmetic testing or any other medical testing and how it should not be allowed. I have one newspaper and one journal on cosmetic testing and both of them focus on how cosmetic testing should not be allowed. What I am doing now is trying to find more evidence and better articles/proof for my paper because the newspaper I found for my topic is not detailed enough for my needs. As I am proceeding with my topic some arguments I think of are the positives of cosmetic testing, what my opponent would argue. I also need to search up proof of those arguments against my topic so I can have Evidence against the opposite side. What I am most worried right now is if this topic will produce enough information that I can use as my proof.

Is the topic of cosmetic testing on animals to specific or can I use medical testing? Do I need to give proof of the opponents ideas/proof? (do I need to quote them?)

– When I think about revising my writing I think of me rereading my work while looking for mistakes like grammatical errors and evidential errors. So when I reread my writing I try to look for all of these mistakes. One time in high school I was revising my research paper and as I was rereading my paper I remembered looking through it first to find the grammatical errors that I made and then looking it over again to try and find all of my evidence and noting if my evidence made sense. If it didn’t make sense I would have to change the paper. Revising, editing and proof reading does accomplish a similar goal but they do different things. To revise your writing means that you are reading to make sure that the entire writing makes sense and that your writing makes total sense. To edit your writing is to read your writing and to look and fix the small specific mistakes like grammar and to proof read mans that you are reading your entire writing to make sure that everything is correct so that there are no errors and everything is coherent. As I read Brock Dethier’s piece on revision I noted that what he said about the negative attitude towards revising ones work does make sense and I know that revising your work in necessary even if you don’t like to revise your work. And as Dethier’s concludes his work he ends on a positive note by letting the reader know all the ways they can learn to revise their work with a positive attitude. When reading the negative attitudes one can have revising your work I related to some of them like how I don’t know how to revise my work correctly and because I believed revising was a waste of time, both of which I knew I had to get rid of because revising is important to complete your writing. I also notice how these negative attitudes are very realistic and possible.

In this assignment I am still in an uncertain state where I have my topic but I am unsure how to proceed on the first draft. The topic I am focusing on Obama’s mistake by underestimating ISIS. I have two articles that I want to focus on and from those two articles I have found my similarities and differences. I have also completed an chart to compare and contrast my two articles along with the beginning of my zero draft. What I am most worried about is starting my first draft and I am also worried because I have never done an rhetorical analysis paper before. What I am focusing on in these two articles is the differences and the unmentioned information that both articles do not touch on.

Notes on ISIS Articles

Liptak, Kevin. “How Could Obama Have ‘underestimated’ ISIS?” CNN. Cable News Network, 01 Jan. 1970. Web. 02 Oct. 2014. <http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/29/politics/obama-underestimates-isis/index.htmlhpt=po_c1>                                                                Notes/Summary                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          In this article on the threat of ISIS this article mainly focuses on the mistakes Obama made by underestimating the threat of ISIS. This article mainly uses quotes Obama’s speech to prove he point that ISIS is a growing threat and that Obama recognizes that he has made a mistake but is not blamed that he was the one that made the mistake. This article also points out the anti-ISIS coalition and the trouble they would have because ISIS expanded further.                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Reflections/Questions                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   I noticed in this article that they mainly focused on the threat of ISIS and they did not specify exactly what the government was going to do. I also noted that in this article they made the point to say that Obama was not the cause of the mistake and that he was not blamed for this mistake of ISIS.

Fieldstadt, Elisha. “Obama: U.S. ‘Underestimated’ ISIS, Overestimated Iraqi Army – NBC News.” NBC News. N.p., 28 Sept. 2014. Web. 05 Oct. 2014. <http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/isis-terror/obama-u-s-underestimated-isis-overestimated-iraqi-army-n213506>                                                                                                                                                                                    Notes/Summary                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 In this article NBS news note how Obama said that the government underestimated the threat of ISIS and because of that Syria was invaded by jihadists. This article also uses quotes from Obama’s speech to show how the government is going to deal with the threat of ISIS and how they are going to deal with the problem in Syria.                                                                                                                                                             Reflections/Questions                                                                                                                                                                                                                From this article I noticed that it does give us, the readers, information but in the same time this article is ver short and I would like more information, so taking this into considerate I may need other articles in place of this because it lack some information. Other than that I like how informative and specific this article is on the actions the government is going to take against ISIS and the problem in Syria.

“Obama: U.S. Underestimated Rise of ISIS in Iraq and Syria.” CBSNews. CBS Interactive, 28 Sept. 2014. Web. 7 Oct. 2014. <http://www.cbsnews.com/news/obama-u-s-underestimated-rise-of-isis-in-iraq-and-syria/>                                                                       Notes/Summary                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         This article also references the 60 minute interview Obama did and this article summarizes the threat in the ISIS situation in Syria and for this they quote the president to show how he is going to deal with this situation. The main point of this article is show how ISIS is an oncoming threat to the U.S. so the government must take actions against ISIS before it causes an big war.                                                                                                                                                                                                           Reflections/Questions                                                                                                                                                                                                                After reading this article I noticed that this article is very informative and to do this the article quotes Obama’s interview on the threat and the mistake of ISIS. This article effectively uses the quotes to prove their main idea that ISIS is becoming a bigger threat to the government. (more informative than NBC news)

Schultz, Marisa, and Bruce Golding. “Obama: We Underestimated ISIS.” New York Post. 28 Sept. 2014. Web. 7 Oct. 2014. <http://nypost.com/2014/09/28/obama-blames-us-intelligence-for-underestimating-isis/>                                                                            Notes/Summary                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             In this article from NYpost this article points out the severe danger ISIS presents itself because of the invasion of Syria. Since ISIS is spreading this article uses the quotes efficiently to show how ISIS is a severe threat. They also show the threat of ISIS with the picture they posted showing the way they terrorize the citizens.                                                                                                                                                                                         Reflections/Questions                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   I noticed how all the articles talk about the same threat the same way and they also use the 60 minute interview Obama had as an point of reference. One aspect tis article did great in is by using a picture to show the threat of ISIS so that there is an visual along with textual evidence of the threat of ISIS.

For my second project i want to pursue the idea of Obama underestimating ISIS. Although I am still unsure of this topic I want to pursue this idea of ISIS being an threat to the government because I find this topic a little bit interesting and I like the idea of how the government reacts to difficult situations. In this situation with ISIS I find that the government acts and gives speeches to the press and the press quotes what they find desirable. This is one aspect that I want to see and pay attention to is the way the press like CBS or CNN uses the information to show what they want their audience to see. In other words they are manipulating the audience using facts. I believe I am going to do this project because it interests me but I am still unsure if this is something I will like to focus on for the entire project. I am unsure of this topic because I believe that politics is a harder and much more difficult understand. So to summarize this all up my topic is on  the ISIS situation, but I may still change the topic, and I know that to do this project I must be able to analyze the meaning of what the press is trying to tell their audience.

“The Rhetorical Situation”

In “The Rhetorical situation” by Bitzer, the author argues about what is an rhetorical situation and to argue his point Bitzer questions the rhetorical situation, “what is a rhetorical situation?” (1). Bitzer then define the aspects that make up a rhetorical situation; he says that a rhetorical situation is “a natural context of persons, events, objects, relations, and an exigence which strongly invites utterance” (5). Then to prove his point he names and describes the three aspects of an rhetorical situation; exigence, audience and constraints. Bitzer then clarifies his point by describing and defining how these three aspects affect the rhetorical situation.

After reading the “The Rhetorical Situation” I felt that this article does point out the facts and details of a rhetorical situation and I from this article i felt as if i have learned parts of what a rhetorical situation is but in the same time the work confused me. what I mainly understood from the work Bitzer wrote was the three aspects of the rhetorical situation: the exigence, audience and constraints.

When is the rhetorical situation most effective and why?

Emma Watson’s Speech About Feminism

The Exigence of this piece is feminism and how people do not treat women the same as men. The Audience of this article is for women and men because the article quoted what Emma Watson said and her speech was for both women and men. The Constraints of this piece is the fact that this article seems to be for Feminism and the article must be able to appeal to the audience.

Ferguson News Analysis

The main argument in the Fox News article is to show how prevalent racism is in their society. Furthermore, it displays how the white American treats a black American unfairly. The purpose of this article was to show how people in that community voiced their opinion. The intended audience were the viewers of Fox 5, however the secondary audience could be the African American race because they can relate to it on a more personal level. Everyone acknowledges that racism exists but to the race involved, it is more of a sensitive topic. Since people acknowledge that there is a separation of race, people tend to focus on the particular nationality that was involved in the crime. In this case, because Brown was black, the media decided to make a report on it. The Aristotelian appeal was pathos because it used emotion to engage the readers. The significance of the graphics displayed was to show police enforcement.
