November-December Class Plan, October 22, 2014

10/28. In Class: NOTE LOCATION CHANGE: “Research Paper Lab.” Room B-135 of the library (where we met for our library class earlier in the semester). HW: Study Gucker, Chapter 7 for quiz on 10/30. Read third and fourth “Perceval” assignment (see earlier post; about an hour’s worth of reading). Due 10/30: Precis for two texts and one scholarly source.

10/30: In Class: Grammar Quiz. Group exchange on précis. Wrap-up of “male quest.” HW: First draft of “male quest” paper: 1000 words (4 double spaced pages, not including biblio), two texts (choose from Ogden, Campbell and Johnson), three sources (2 scholarly papers; de Troyes’s epic poem). Bibliography, Vocabulary (separated by text) with word derivations.

11/4. In-Class: Return of Grammar Quiz. “Male Quest” Draft due today; individual reviews. CLASS LOCATION MAY CHANGE TO LIBRARY. TBA. Find two sources, books, newspaper articles, magazine articles, documentaries about Maori culture for prep of movie screening on Thursday. Be sure to note bibliographical references for articles. Write a précis for one article. HW: Rewrite papers, DUE 11/11.

11/6. In-Class: Screening of Whale Rider. (Location TBA). Class will run 5-7 minutes longer. HW: Write a two to three paragraph description (similar to a précis but noting progression of plot). One paragraph on your interpretation of the film. Afterward, read “Prologue” in Witi Ihimaera’s “The Whale Rider.” (7 e-book pages).

11/11. In Class: Final “male quest” papers DUE TODAY. Small Group discussion of the movie, précis, ending in full-class presentations, viewing of selected scenes. Please hand in précis. HW: Read “Spring” and “Summer” in Ihimaera’s book. Be prepared for in-class writing assignment on 11/13.

11/13. In-Class: Writing Assignment. Class discussion: Choosing portions/scenes for research paper. (We will review individual scenes, if possible). Topics for research paper. HW: Write a headline for your research paper, and a thesis paragraph. Find three scholarly sources to support your thesis. Bring these to class.

11/18. In-Class: Sharing sources. Exchange of thesis paragraphs. Class discussion and rewrite of paragraphs. HW: Write first five paragraphs of your paper, full biblio. Make sure you are keeping a vocabulary to be handed in with final paper. Bring sources and paper to class on 11/20. Description of Research/Term Paper: 1300 words, two texts (film and novel); three sources must be scholarly papers.

11/20. In Class: Research Paper Lab. “EXTRA HOUR” TODAY after class. HW: Write the remainder of your DRAFT paper for 11/25.

11/25: In-Class: Individual review of drafts. HW: Complete your papers for Rewrite of your papers. Papers, along with vocabulary and biblio, due 12/2.

Thanksgiving Break: Thursday, 11/27 to Sunday, 11/30.

12/2: In Class: FINAL RESEARCH PAPER DUE. HW: Grammar Quiz, Chapter 29. Prepare a folder of your quizzes, in-class writing assignments and two research papers.

12/4: In Class: Grammar Quiz, Chapter 29. Group discussion of our semester’s work. HW: Write 2-3 paragraphs: “The five new vocabulary words I now use regularly” and “The Idea/s I learned in this class and in a scholarly paper.”

12/9: In-Class: Return of Grammar Quiz and Term/Research papers. Group discussion and then wrap-up of what we learned this semester. Individual meetings.

12/11: Class Party.
