There were many different reasons among college students for choosing the major they study. Some people just do it for the passion and others might just want a higher chance of finding jobs in the market. Some of the ideas explained in the article of Violette George “Factors Influencing Students’ Choice of the Accounting Major.” There are many reasons behind choosing a major to learn.
The data show that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced a possible increase of 15.7% in the number of accounting jobs in the years of 2010 and 2020. Leading to the most important reason for picking accounting as a major is that the job market had grown significantly for accounting over the years. From the data, Violette (2012) concluded that about 48 percent of the college students decided to have an accounting as of their career goal. There are lots of students who chose it because they wanted to find a job. Through the survey that was done by the team of Violette (2012), it concludes that besides the job market, another factor that influences the major was the classes they take. Many introductory courses such as the primary economic class, give them a big picture of how the major is going to be and things they are likely to study in the individual majors.
When considering a major to study, I think it’s essential to take the factor of career into the picture. I believe everyone has something they love to do, but sometimes, it can’t support you financially. I can still remember, at one of Baruch major fair. There are many small desks around the room, and representative of different major fields will be sitting there, answering questions from those who needed to know more about a major they are interested. They will also explain classed required to be taken in that major. The first question everyone will ask is “How is this major like, what is included in that major?” and the following up question is mostly “Is it easy to find a job after graduating as taking this major?” Like I mention in my first post, it’s important to go after your dream, but it’s imperative to look at the reality. For me, the reality is something I refer to when having decision times. I agree with those survey result; those high school courses do help as letting the students know more about what they like. This is one of the reasons that bring accounting into my consideration of major.
