USA Cricket

Do you know?

“America has one of the richest cricketing histories of other countries in the world.”

The Philadelphian cricket team, shown here on an 1884 tour of England, were the premier American cricket team for several decades after the US Civil War.

Baseball may be thought of as an American sport with a long and illustrious history, but cricket actually predates it. In fact, cricket was being played here before it became the United States, and historical records as early as 1709 have chronicled its existence.

The United States national cricket team is the official representative team of the United States in the sport of international cricket. Cricket, a popular sport in many parts of the world, has gained a growing following in the United States in recent years, leading to the establishment and development of the national team.

Historically, the United States of America Cricket Association (USACA) was responsible for organizing and overseeing the national team’s activities. USACA became an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1965, which granted them recognition and allowed the United States to participate in international cricket events.

However, in June 2017, the ICC took the decision to expel the USACA due to concerns regarding governance and financial management issues within the organization. This decision left the United States team without a proper governing body. To ensure the continuation of cricket activities in the country, the ICC Americas region temporarily assumed the oversight of the U.S. team until a new sanctioning body could be established.

In January 2019, a significant milestone was achieved when USA Cricket was officially granted associate membership by the International Cricket Council. This move provided the United States national cricket team with a new governing body, focused on the development and promotion of cricket within the country. USA Cricket now oversees the administration, selection, and organization of the national team, as well as the growth of the sport at various levels.

The granting of associate membership to USA Cricket reflects the growing interest and potential for cricket in the United States. It opens up opportunities for the national team to participate in international competitions, engage in bilateral series with other cricket-playing nations, and work towards the goal of ultimately becoming a full member of the ICC.

With the formation of USA Cricket, there has been a renewed focus on talent development, infrastructure, and grassroots initiatives to support the growth of the sport across the country. Efforts are being made to expand the player base, provide training and coaching programs, establish competitive domestic leagues, and build state-of-the-art cricket facilities to facilitate the growth and popularity of cricket in the United States.

The United States national cricket team aims to make significant strides in international cricket and compete with the established cricketing nations. As the sport continues to gain traction and interest within the country, the team’s performances and achievements will play a crucial role in promoting cricket and inspiring future generations of American cricketers.

The journey of the United States national cricket team reflects the potential and aspirations of cricket in the United States, as well as the efforts to establish a solid foundation for the sport to flourish and gain recognition on the global stage.
