Latin America and the Caribbean: Cultures and Societies

Community Agreements

Based on your feedback:

.We will ensure everyone feels welcomed and heard, regardless of their background, languages, and views (as long as it’s respectful). We will treat everyone’s ideas, opinions, and identities with kindness and understanding.

.Community building and solidarity are vital to us. We will be open to turning our cameras on and promoting positive, respectful interactions during Zoom sessions, on the chat, and in discussions.

.An open mind and respect for other cultures and experiences are essential.

.There is no standard English in this class. We will honor, respect, and celebrate linguistic differences.

.We will keep mics on mute when someone is speaking and raise our hands if we want to participate to enhance understanding.

.We will write in the chat box when we have any info we want to add or ask about. This would mean Dr. Robles will check the chat frequently.

.During breakout room discussions, we will encourage everybody to talk and listen to every member to make it generative.

.While doing group work, we will listen to each other, pay attention to each other, and help each other out. We will be open to any concerns so that everyone is comfortable.

.We will be proactive when working together in groups, keeping each other updated. We will give room for clarification.

.We are conscious of different types of learners and want various sources and activities. It’s crucial to have grounded discussions that are also fun.

.As we learn, we want to highlight how our learning applies to our lives. We can all learn a lot from this class and from each other.

.To relax and recharge, we will have a 10 or 15-minute break in each Zoom session and then continue with the class.

.Dr. Robles will inform us about weekly assignments, deadlines, calendar changes, grades, and events. He will also provide a recap at the end of each session.

.If we need them, we will request office (student) hours to clarify questions, better understand assignments, or brainstorm for them. Student hours are also open if we want to share our own research or knowledge or just bounce ideas on college life.

.We will keep the communication lines open during the semester and beyond.
