The Lasting Legacies of Open Admissions

You’re very pleased that you met some friends from the past again, but you are also starting to feel tired and so you look for the exit. Some arrows point toward what looks like a large exhibit with lots of electronic consoles. You wonder what you will find there. As you start walking toward this exhibit, you sense a tap on your shoulder. You turn around and find Francee Covington waving and smiling at you. You’re happy to see Francee and ask her what she’s been up to all this time. (Find out what Francee has been up to after CUNY).

You ask Francee if she’s been to the exhibit you were just walking toward, and she is excited to tell you about it. She tells you that it’s set up as a timeline of the history of CUNY, with lots of stuff from the 1960s and 1970s, when you both were more active at CUNY. But, Francee tells you, she found one piece from the 1990s very interesting. It’s a report commissioned by then-mayor Rudy Giuliani’s administration, called “An Institution Adrift”. This report was instrumental in shaping the future governance of CUNY and ultimately led to the final act and conclusion of Open Admissions policies. You are intrigued by this, and you want to check it out yourself.

You proceed to the exhibit, and walk up directly to the console that contains the document that Francee told you about.

You look at the table of contents and decide to read the section entitled “Reinventing Open Admissions”.

You wonder what the rest of the report says about CUNY and how it functions, and you also wonder how the authors of the report came to their conclusions. You flip through the rest of the report and read some other sections that you find intriguing.

You wonder what the rest of the exhibit is like, and you start exploring the other parts of CUNY’s historical timeline.
