11-14-2019 Lesson Plan WWD

Learning Narrative 3 and ELD (10-15 min)

Go to CourseWeb>Course Documents>Assignment Prompts to download the prompt for Learning Narrative 3. Let’s talk about that.

Okay, now let’s talk about the ELD and how it connects to all of your Learning Narratives as well as the rest of the writing you’ve done in the course.

In-Class Revision Time (30-45 min)

I want to give you some time in class to look over your drafts and start to craft a revision plan. (see Revision Plan Guidelines on CourseWeb).

Some things to consider:

  • What is the publication? Can you find 5-7 models to study to help think about how to revise tone, organization, layout, etc.?
  • IMRaDing or not: how does the results section look different from the discussion section? Are you writing a grant proposal? How does the IMRaD format play a role (or not)? Should it?
  • Are you getting lost in the data analysis? How do you keep audience and goals at forefront of the paper?
  • Stylistic concerns: can you use stylistic tools to emphasize certain points better to signal evaluation in tactful way (e.g., amplification)? Do you have readability issues (e.g., too many similar sentences of same type or length, lack of coherence RE: Given/New principle)?
  • Do you need to spend more time on advanced calculation either in sci/tech portion or in public portion? How do you shift in writing about it for one audience vs. the other?
  • Are you performing an advanced calculation? Is it appropriate (e.g., randomly selected sample?)? Do the data meet required assumptions to use it (e.g., assumptions for t-test, see here for assumptions for Pearson’s correlation coefficient, see here for assumptions for confidence interval)? Do you need to change it or use something cited in secondary research?
  • Remember: advanced calculation does not need to be center of the story. Can just be a role player. What is interesting about your data and how does it relate to the audience and goals you have for the piece?
