OMETs (10-15 min)
I want to give you some time to fill these out in class. I’ll leave the room and someone can come grab me when you all are done.
Learning Narrative Workshop (30 min)
I thought one way to get ready for the ELD assignment is to look back at a solid Learning Narrative to think about the kinds of moves that are interesting and useful to make in this kind of writing. I’m passing out a copy of a LN that I thought did some cool things and (like all pieces!) could do more cool things than what is here at current.
Questions to consider:
- Where is the energy in the piece? What are you most drawn to? Why?
- Where is it specific? Where does it use evidence from writing effectively? How does it do that?
- Where does it focus on goals or tendencies as a writer? How does it do that?
- Where do you think the writer can go into more detail? Why? What could they do?
- Do they spend too much space on any one subject–where space could have been used for something else instead?
Wrap-up (5-10 min)
Any writing is writing with data, but we have been studying and practicing very systematic collections, management, analysis, interpretation, and communication of data, often in quantified forms. Such work can bring hubris that often needs to be humbled, it can bring a desire for transparency that often lacks meaning, and it can make you feel alone when you should reach out for a larger community that is invested in the work you are doing.
To Do:
- ELD and DV submitted by 12/12 at 11:59pm. Stay in touch if issues with this. READ PROMPTS for requirements for these projects, especially for little things you might forget (e.g., how to submit)–but, of course, the big picture stuff is most important.
- Highly recommend backward planning, like we tried out before Thanksgiving break. If you are done on 12/12, what are you doing on 12/11? On 12/9? On 12/7? And so on. Have specific goals you want to hit for each day if your target end date is 12/12.
- You are welcome to revise a major writing project, just let me know if you are doing that. If revising major project, highlight places where you revised to make my life easier since I’ll be grading a bunch of other stuff .
