First-Year Seminar 2017 – DFA

Best Eats Around Campus

It 100% shames me to admit that every single weekday my classmates and I spend our money on food. Every day we go get something to eat in between classes, it’s honestly sad how little self-control we have when it comes to buying food. It’s like we just can’t help ourselves, as long as we have the money we have to get something to eat.

As you might expect we’ve eaten at a few places and it’s safe to say we are pretty much experts at getting food around Baruch.

If you need coffee obviously Starbucks is a great choice. There are three locations super close to the school, one is literally a part of the building, you don’t even have to spend any extra time in the cold you can just get it right before you swipe in. We used to go there almost ritually at one point, probably super unhealthy but you only live once.

Now, when it comes to food there are so many options. You can go to the dollar pizza place if you’re looking for something quick and filling. There’s also Subway, McDonalds, and Popeyes all within a 5-10 minute walk from the school. Of course I can’t forget to mention the Halal food trucks, one of us ate from them twice a day every day for like two months, but I won’t name any names. *coughJoycough*

The last place I’ll mention is a personal favorite of mine, Yaya. We went there to buy Pocky and rice balls. That one is a little further away but I definitely recommend it, just make sure to pay attention when you’re unwrapping the rice balls. There’s clear instructions on the plastic, otherwise you’ll struggle with the seaweed.

Blog 3

On Thursday November 16 I went to a STARR workshop with a bunch of other friends. The workshop was basically a lesson on Linked-in. They discussed the main parts of the website and gave advice on what to include in our profiles when we make them. Unfortunately since I am a freshman and I’m still changing my mind about what career path is right for me, the workshop didn’t really apply to my current life. However, I learned a lot about Linked-in for future reference.

Personally, before the workshop, I wasn’t aware of the importance of creating a linked in profile. I have grown up mostly surrounded by people that have pretty decent jobs despite never having used the social networking service therefore I assumed it wasn’t necessary.

At the workshop I learned that employers actually look to a potential employee’s linked-in profile for a lot of information about that person that could be crucial for them to determine whether you’re a valid candidate for the position they are offering.

Recruiters look for how many contacts you have, the ideal number is 300 or more. It’s important short and to-the-point summary of your achievements so that they can see why you’d be an asset without boring them. They also said that it will be easier for you to be found if you’re very clear about your industry and  job function in your headline.

There was a lot more advice than that but the point is that I learned a lot about what to include into my profile when I start one.

Study Abroad Info Session

On October 12, a few friends from class and I went to an information session about the study abroad options in Baruch. It was very informative and definitely made me rethink my decision not to study abroad. They discussed a few ways for students to go abroad and a few of the rules for some programs. I’ve been thinking about what an amazing experience it would be to go to a different country to study ever since I walked out of the room. I think I’m going to sleep on it.

There are a few things that they mentioned in the information session that I’m going to particularly take into consideration. One thing that I think was very important is that if you want to study abroad you should start thinking about it as soon as possible, even freshmen year. In order to be fully prepared and have everything planned out properly it is best to have as much time as possible, and the sooner you start thinking about it the more time you’ll have to prepare.

Something that has always held me back from the hope of actually studying abroad is the cost. I pretty much decided in my sophomore year of high school that the idea of studying abroad was unrealistic because it would be so expensive. However, I learned at the session that there are ways to make studying abroad more economically accessible to students who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it, such as scholarships and honors programs.

Overall it was a very informative meeting and I’m glad I went because it opened the door for me to a possibility that I didn’t think I had.

Blog #1(Art Gallery Trip Take 2)

A few days ago I went to the Canada Art Gallery with some of my friends from the class, I believe it was Thursday the 14th. A funny story about that actually is that I had gone already about a week beforehand, but I totally forgot to take a selfie… so I went again. I had two different experiences at the gallery, but today we’re talking about the most recent one.
I actually ended up getting there pretty late because my alarm failed me miserably that morning. (I wasn’t the last one there though!) When I got there everybody already left so I called Albaceer, and he told me that they had gone to the festival, but Shanjana was on her way back because she forgot her selfie. After, we both took our selfies and waited for some other people to show up. Joy arrived first. She walked in, said hi, took a selfie, talked with us a little, and then left us… fake! Shortly after these betrayals from our friends,
good ol’ Liam arrived, he took his selfie and then he, Shanjana, and I were on our way to school.
On our journey back to school, we decided to pass through the fair, where Shanjana and Liam got some hot dogs. We then went to Starbucks so that I could get a mocha frappe, of course. Finally we took the train and arrived to class perfectly on time, and with minutes to spare. Also, we forgave our friends for being fake.
