First-Year Seminar 2017 – DFA

Career Blog (#3)

Yesterday, I went to the Career Development session. The instructor for the event taught us about the benefits and how to use LinkedIn. I already have an account but I did learn somethings on what to add to my account to make more employers seek my page as well as making my profile look more professional. LinkedIn is basically a resume alternative supplement. Employers still would like one’s resume, but what matters is if your resume matches your LinkedIn account. I currently need to update my LinkedIn account. I haven’t updated since I became employed at Modell’s Sporting Goods. The instructor at the event basically said that we should have a professional profike picture and other significant experiences listed. My profile picture that I first took for the website is somewhat professional to me. Even though I was in my bathroom at home. I do plan on retaking that picture to make it more professional looking. I’ll probably put on a white blouse to look like I’m already working in a business place.

Besides LinkedIn, nothing else was really taught during this session. However, LinkedIn is very necessary for our future careers so it wasn’t a wasted visit. I’ll edit mine probably before looking for internships for my sophomore year.

Blog #2: WICC

I joined the West Indian/ Caribbean Club (WICC). This club was created to bring Caribbean vibes to Baruch as well as to teach many the history of the Caribbean culture. This is because when many think of Caribbeans they think of food and dance. The leaders of this club want to bring out how there is much more to it than that.

The last meeting I attended started with an icebreaker. I’ve played this icebreaker so many times already from just coming to Baruch. We played Rock Paper Scissors (tournament style). I’m honestly tired of this game at this point. This is mainly because I always lose. After you lose a one on one rock paper scissors game, you have to cheer on whoever your opponent was so that he can beat his next opponent. This will continue until theres only two people left with many people behind them cheering them on.

After this they started talking about the club. I noticed plates and heard that we were going to get pizza. I was very hungry so I was really excited for the pizza I must say. However, before the pizza came we started playing a group online game on Kahoot that WICC created. The game asked trivia questions on Carribean countries of the Antilles and more that I didn’t know anything about. I was surprised to get in 5th place at one point of the game. I guessed majority of the answers I put.

After the game, we finally got to eat the pizza. It tasted great and I honestly wanted seconds. After eating pizza, we went right back to playing another game of Kahoot, in which I lost again. It’s okay though. I’ll learn more about the carribean culture as I continue to attend the WICC.

Destinee’s Blog #1

One day our English teacher told us to go visit this art gallery on 333 Broome street. Before she told us to do so I never visited an art gallery before. I’ve only been to museums on those days when I was younger when either my summer camp, elementary school, or middle school took everyone. Those were the days. Even though we would always get tired of going to the Museum of Natural History every year.

I decided to go to the art museum with my friend from my old school that has been wanting to go to a museum for a while now as well as a girl from a school by my house. They picked me up from work on 57th street and Lexington Ave. From there we took the 6 train to Spring street. At first, I didn’t know the exact address of the gallery. It was either 133 Broome street or 333 Broome street. If the first address we went to was incorrect then I guess we would’ve had to do extra traveling.

Thankfully, the first address we went to was the correct one (333 Broome Street). The doors said “CANADA”. My English teacher tried to tell us that this gallery was suppose to make us feel like we were in Canada. When we walked through the doors all I saw was a white wall and heard a voice talking out of a speaker I couldn’t even see. As we walked further into the art gallery, all we saw was a room with a bunch of regular sized pictures neatly set up. That honestly made me mad because I was thinking an art gallery would’ve been bigger and better than what I saw.

We looked around at the photos on the wall and didn’t know the meaning behind it really. I decided to take pictures to prove that I actually went to the gallery just in case. I guess the gallery was a good background for those.
