Raised by a father who – quite frankly- exposed me way too early to Eminem rhyming about father-daughter relationships and later participant in my youth choir’s performance of the fabulous Musical “Fame”, in which one of the characters was a cute rapper, I was always fascinated by the aggression and authenticity with which rappers express their emotions. I also always wondered how it all even started. The whole thing with the pants on knee level , the rap battles and its resulting evolvement of very intense negatively loaded phrases and words. I mean, anger and frustration are universal human feelings but what triggered a whole new culture, called Hip Hop to come up and reach even the most expensive Broadway Musicals you can see on stage these days? Then our final english assigment asked us to research something we might want to further explore and after doing so, it suddenly all made sense!
