First-Year Seminar 2017 – DMB

Joseph Viscuso – Blog Post 3

Today I attended a marketing career expo to satisfy my final blog requirement. While at the event I learned quite a lot about the field of marketing, which is something I am quite interested in. As of now I have my intended major as business management, but I always had an interest in marketing. I enjoy talking to people and I want to be able to travel when I work. It is a dream of mine to be working for a company that would send me all over the world. A month in France? I’m down. Two weeks in Tokyo? I’m already out the door. Even if the travelling is relegated to within the US, I would cherish that job. And the field of marketing is where I have a pretty good shot at making that dream job a reality. I am also really into pop culture; a self- proclaimed nerd dare I say. In the field of marketing this is actually desired by many. Compared to most other “suit and tie” business jobs Baruch grooms us for marketing is unique in that it embraces expression. The primary goal for a marketer, per the expo, is to show their respective company in a positive light to the public. Whether this be through social media, television, the internet, or even spoken word, many times the creativity of these marketers is remembered. Jingles of companies, slogans, even colors are all done by someone in the marketing field. And that interests me more than any “normal” business job does. After attending this career expo, I may be experiencing a change of heart in regard to my intended major. And that is what college is all about, embracing and accepting change. I truly enjoyed this expo and am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to meet so many people in the field of work that interests me so much.

Art Is Fun(?) – Joseph Viscuso

My visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art was rather interesting. For an Art History class, we are required to visit the Met, take pictures of pieces of art from many different time periods, and (the fun part) write a 3000-word paper about said art. You read that right. 3000 words. For a damn art history class. But assignment aside, I did enjoy my time visiting. I have never personally been to many museums in my life time, living on Staten Island does not give you many choices and I never wanted to go to the city just to visit a museum. That changed this year, as I have already visited two museums in the past two months, whether or not by choice is up for debate. The Rubin back in September and The Met today. Before we even walked in we were greeted by the sight of a fountain that put on a water display, something similar to the Las Vegas water shows just not as grand in scale. After entering I was immediately taken back by how large this museum actually was. The lobby alone had to be just as big as the entire Rubin museum. I did get to see some rather famous paintings that we discussed in class such as The Death of Socrates which was really cool. It’s still no Mona Lisa, but hey, I can’t complain. Now as I write on my way home, after taking a nap of course, I still cannot say I am a fan of art. What I can say however is that I am more open to art as a vehicle to deeper understanding. And I guess at the end of the day that is what life is all about. Living and learning.

Joining the MOB – Joseph Viscuso

Today I attended the general interest meeting for the MOB (Marketers of Baruch), not to be confused with that shady crime organization. The experience as a whole was surreal to say the least. Up until this point, I had not been involved in any school activities, I did what I came to do and I left. So, this school had always felt more like a job to me than what I had originally envisioned for college. I saw something in that meeting room that I had not seen since High School. Genuine friendship. Many students at Baruch go about their day with little to no interaction with other students. Myself included. But after this meeting that is most definitely going to change.

Simply being at the meeting gave me a sense of belonging. I knew that these people would help me out, a total stranger, if I so desired it. And seeing other freshmen who were in the same position as I was very reassuring. All the members of MOB were extremely kind and caring when answering the questions I still had. The brief meeting went over everything that the club stood for and they constantly emphasized the social aspect of the club. Promises of days were members could just hang out and unwind from the work of school. I went into that meeting a stranger but left as a friend. Of course, free food is always a nice bonus.

Now that I have had a taste of what the clubs of Baruch can offer I fully intend to check out all the clubs that peak my interest. And to anyone who reads this, I cannot implore you enough to get involved. Take it from me, that quiet kid in your class, if something here at Baruch interests you, go for it.
