First-Year Seminar 2017 – DMB

Career Post

For my third and final blog post I chose to reach out to the STARR program at Baruch. I have made a STARR account, and created a meeting with an advisor. I tried to schedule this meeting before the post was due, but the only time slot available was shortly after. Instead of a meeting, I did research and prepared myself for my meeting.

For this meeting I created a preliminary resume that looks nothing like I would like. I put all my past work experience, my skills, and education. I need to find a way to make it look nice, and what looks better to put on my resume to attract employers. I also filled out my STARR account to my knowledge. This included much of the same information as my resume.

Overall, this program will create a strong foundation for me in the business world and help me make connections. This is career oriented because creating a STARR account alone will link me with job opportunities. I have yet to make a good resume and I am excited to have a useable resume. Having a good resume will let me apply for jobs, internships, and will open other opportunities.

(It will not let me upload a picture. Email me if you would like me to send it to you)

Club Post Jason Engongoro

Throughout high school I participated in many clubs, groups, and sports teams because I loved getting involved with my peers through the schools. I wanted to continue this habit in college so on the second week of college I looked into clubs and sports and found the soccer club. During the first club meeting everyone introduced themselves and shared their favorite soccer team. I quickly made friends and started chatting with some of the guys that were also at the meeting. After many activities we did a juggling competition (which is a contest to see who can kick the soccer ball up to themselves as many times as possible without it hitting the ground). This happened to be something I am very good at, and after winning the competition I was asked to join a team. The guys I had been talking to informed they had a spot left on their intramural team, Los Jerros. Without hesitation I told them yes and learned more about the team and league. I attended a team practice and prepared for our first game. This team I joined plays in the Baruch Gym during club hours, which is perfect for me.

Today, October 26 during club hours I participated in my first intramural soccer game. I went to the gym with high hopes after our first game was cancelled, but was quickly disappointed. When I walked in I found my whole team being reprimanded by a counselor. Unfortunately they all had to leave and inly me and one other player were left to play a 5v5 game. Fortunately, my friends Tyler, and Illyen were able to come and play. We all played our hearts out and had fun while doing so. We may have lost the game due to Tyler’s poor goalkeeping but we had a blast. I am very happy I got involved in the club and could encourage some friends to play with me too. I look forward to continuing the season and maybe making a tea, of my own next year.

Academic Post

I recently visited the Rubin Museum on 17th street in New York. I originally attended this museum for the sole reason to complete an assignment for my art history class but my visit became much more.

The first purpose of visiting this very specialized and interesting museum was to find Indian art that portrayed the main religions practiced in  India. The two main religions are Buddhism, and Hinduism. They both are very similar yet, fairly different. For our assignment we had to identify a Buddha, and write an essay about it, we also had to identify a Hindu deity (god). Fortunately the museum was covered in artifacts, paintings, and representations of these worshiped gods and goddesses so I was able to take a picture and be on my way immediately. I assumed that I would walk in and walk out of the museum, but my friends, and the fact that I had to pay $10 made me stay a little longer; I am so glad I did stay longer.

I explored past the first floor of the museum and found many interesting things that the museum had to offer. I went to each floor closely examining exhibits like the OM room, and the recreation of a shrine room. These exhibits engulfed you in indian culture and made me understand their culture and my assignment much better. I took my time and found many pieces of art that I really enjoyed. Taking the extra step, and further exploring the museum turned out to help me out in the long run, and teach mea valuable lesson.

I learned two important lessons that will help me in my freshman year. I found that I should not always just do the assignment, and turn it in as soon as I think I’m finished. I should think about assignments more, and go the extra mile because it will prove to help me understand the work better, and enjoy what I am doing. I also learned that New York has so much to offer, and I just have to go out there and look for it.
