Keeping it Neutral for a Mutual interest

Keeping it Neutral for a Mutual interest

Net neutrality is the recent decision that the FCC, voted on to keep the internet neutral. Simply put the decision will allow the government to regulate ISP’s (internet service providers) similarly to public utility companies (some kind of public wellbeing in mind). I personally believe that more good will come out of this than bad, which is why I’m in favor of this ruling. Basically by allowing the internet to remain open, it ensures an “equality of speed” for everyone. As consumers we will not see our internet speeds tethered because were not paying more to access a faster internet channel. Speaking of which, companies like Netflix and Amazon already pays Comcast an additional sum of money to ensure that their pages or services load faster/ or receives a priority when transmitting their data over the internet. As you can see we would run into serious problems if this would be the new normal for companies to pay for the delivery of their content over the internet, because in the endgame it would be US the consumers would have to pay that additional cost.

Another defense for Net Neutrality is that it purposefully greases the wheels of our “free market” economy, it leaves the doors open for innovative small companies and start up to flourish. Let us Consider Facebook in its infancy, if the internet wasn’t neutral think of how difficult it would be for its millions users to access their Facebook page, this alone would deter users from using the service. Studies have shown if a page doesn’t load fast enough users usually more on to the next best thing. Now let’s consider the next waves of geek in their garages, plotting the next big thing, by limiting the internets purpose to only those with deep. . .really deep corporate pockets, ISP’s will be essentially stifling innovation. This is bad for the economic prowess of America and bad for consumers, bad for innovation, and just frankly a bad idea. Pretty much the only beneficiaries to an unregulated internet are the ISP, whose only worries are their profits. Which is not such a bad thing, but when it interferes with this much goodwill, let it be regulated for the better. Net Neutrality
