Keppeler Oscar Writing 1 English 2100 Professor Wilson   Writing Mimesis: “ You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? ’Cause I walk like I've got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops, Weakened by my soulful cries? Does my haughtiness offend you? Don't you take it awful hard ’Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines Diggin’ in my own backyard. You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I've got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs? Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise Up from a past that’s rooted in pain I rise I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise I rise I rise. ” Prompt About Playing Football: I never thought I could learn so much from a sport and still be able to get so much joy from playing the sport. Falling in love with football when I only had ill thoughts of it beforehand, truly taught me to be an open-minded person and have more of a “ don’t knock it till I try it ” kind of attitude. Aside from that, I learned life skills that I was able to apply outside the game and in the real world. Things like discipline and cooperation through teamwork as well as effort hold a huge impact in being a part of that. Reflection:  Truthfully speaking there wasn’t too much of a difference in my writing after performing the exercise but I was quite passionate to write about my prompt after copying down the poem. I believe this may be because of the powerful and inspirational poem by Maya Angelou “ Still I Rise which spoke to my soul. My thought process was still the same, I didn’t notice myself changing up my writing style to match a poem or anything of the sort.  Writing following Hormesis/stress: Continuing my story, I feel as if my story can inspire others to not only give certain sports a try and see what they experience from it but to also have the drive to try new things and not be afraid of the unknown. This experience also gives people the chance to find themselves in all these activities so not only are they learning about the outside world but they are getting to know themselves within as well. For me that was everything and having good people around you experience the same thing and stick beside you was all the more comforting.  Reflection: I realized after exercising for about 10 minutes after the workout was over I wanted to sit down and take a break. I don’t know if this means I am out of shape but I knew I wanted nothing more than to sit down. I then immediately got to writing my prompt but I felt as if subconsciously I moving slowly to do it and in more of a relaxed state. Simply from tiredness, I didn’t have that passion I displayed earlier when I was writing. This time I purposely was slow to place my fingers on the keyboard and drew up blanks. The only thing on my mind was water to drink and the thought of when my loud breathing would come to a stop. I was in a more relaxed state and easily got distracted. This by far did not make me focus on writing in the slightest.
