Updates: Schedule/Assignments, DDA, Grading Contract
I think, realistically, it is better to do one draft minimum of CfC rather than 2 since proposals got pushed back. Let’s go over schedule and talk it out.
Note:
May 5 (schedule instead of full draft)
May 12 (full draft)
I don’t think I’m going to move the default grade. However, because I think the Experiential-Learning Document option for the final reflective assignment is so important to learning, I want to propose another option to help boost grades. Let’s go over the prompt. (this could also work if you are still missing work).
Let’s go over this assignment. It is on Blackboard in “Submit Assignments.”
Rhetorical Velocity: Press Releases and Memes (20-30 minutes)
Make a comment. Take 5-10 minutes, read over your classmates’ posts, and make a comment.
Let’s talk terms. What do you think about the following?
Sticky?
Mobile?
Strategic composition for re-composition: how do you do that?
- Know the medium: where do you want it to circulate and how do things circulate well there? (e.g., a social media platform vs. a print flyer you hand out on a street corner)
- Know the genre: what do people expect from this kind of document? (e.g., a billboard, an Instagram post, a web advertisement, an op-ed)
- Know the content: what is appealing, fun, interesting about the content? (e.g., a memorable fact, the use of color, humor)
- Know technology: what is easy to use to adapt? (e.g., the file format, how to tweak the language, how to make copies)
Memes: Kairos 21.2: Gries, Mapping Obama Hope – Index (technorhetoric.net)
Press Releases: PR Newswire: press release distribution, targeting, monitoring and marketing
Watch the Obama Hope meme page and look at patterns. Read through 2 press releases.
What do you notice about what is stick, mobile, and strategic recomposition in any of those?
Respond to this question in our text thread on Discord for today.
Work on Campaign for Circulation (20-30 minutes)
Let’s look over the questions for the proposal. If you have already completed your proposal, look over the May 5 assignment for the schedule.
Post in our Discord thread for today what you want to work on: a question response to the proposal, work on two text explanations in the schedule assignment, etc.
I’m here for questions, but I want an update by 3:40pm on where you are at in a post to our Discord thread.
Next Time
-Tableau workshop–make sure you download program before class
-Have your proposal for your Campaign for Circulation by Thursday night
