Discussion Rules (10 min)
I want to work with you to set up some ground rules for having a discussion.
First, what I want to try:
- Talk to each other by name: For at least the first 3 weeks (maybe longer if we need to), when you participate in class, I want you to use the name of someone you are responding to. So, if speaking out loud, you say their name. If writing in Discord, write their name out.
- Say back what you heard. Try to say back what you heard as it is relevant to the point you want to make. So if you are addressing someone, make sure you put forward what you understand they are saying. The person who is being responded to should feel free to clarify what they said.
- Keep the convo going. Don’t wait for me! I’m going to be involved, but hopefully by end of semester, I won’t be saying much. Keep it going, talk to one another. Share ideas. I’ll come by with questions from time to time, but I want you to drive the discussion. This is a seminar class for upper-class students…you all are pinnacle intellectuals! Let’s flex that muscle.
Okay, so here is where you all come in:
What behaviors or norms in discussion do we want? What is good based on past classes?
What behaviors or norms do we not want?
Do some private writing and then we will share (and we will practice the “talking to each other” stuff!!!). When ready to share, you can write in our Discord lesson text channel for today or you can just speak up.
Once we have some good ideas, I’ll take things I want to see and combine them with your ideas.
Key Terms and Aims in Data Feminism: “How can we use data to remake the world?” (30-45 min)
I looked over your Response Posts and comments on Discord and made a Google Doc of all the key terms and aims that people mentioned. Today, I want us to look again at these terms and aims and see if we can revise to make a reference document we use and update throughout the semester.
In groups, you’ll take on each section and use the textbook to revise the definition and some words about its application.
Then, we will come back together and talk through the revisions.
Response Post 2 (5 min)
Let’s go to Blackboard and open up the prompt for Response Post 2 and go over it.
Review Literacy and Numeracy Narrative Assignment (5-10 min)
I also want to touch base on the Literacy and Numeracy Narrative that is due on February 10.
Dr. Belmihoub Zoom About Study (10-15 min)
Go to this link and Dr. Belmihoub will tell you about a study. I’ll make sure you are all there, will assign Dr. Belmihoub as a host, and then leave once we are all settled.
