Changyun’s tip on creating exams on McGraw-Hill Connect

It’s quite handy to create midterm exam on McGraw-Hill Connect. One thing with Connect is that you can create a question pool for each chapter and then randomly draw a specified number of questions from the pool. As a result, students take test on Connect are facing different questions. You can follow this Youtube video to create pool of questions on Connect with its test bank.
However, I do not use Connect test bank because it’s been said that some students may have access to test bank somehow. In this case, I have to further import my own questions one by one into Connect, which is quite time-consuming. If anyone knows a better way importing questions into Connect, please share with us. You can follow this Youtube video to import your own questions into Connect.
Last but not least, sometimes we do not want our students to have access to our test questions once they complete the test. You can do that by setting up the exam policy as “no feedback” after submission.

  1. I don’t know how to create a new post so I thought I’d tag onto this tip, since it deals with Connect.

If you are using TestBuilder with Test Banks in Connect to either create an online test OR to select questions to export to Blackboard as a Pool there is a bug (confirmed by M-H Technical Support) you should be aware of. In particular, the feature to filter questions by Difficulty, or Type, or Topic, fails to work except in very restrictive situations. You can try it yourself: Create a sample test in TestBuilder, select a chapter in the Test Bank, then try to filter by, say, Topic and Difficulty. You will find that you get many questions that don’t fit the criteria you specified. It’s as if ANDs get changed to ORs, but I haven’t done comprehensive tests to confirm this. There are limited filters that will work, for example by Type and by Difficulty is OK, the issue seems to involve more complex criteria where you can make multiple selections (so that the filter FOR THAT CRITERION should be an OR). The reason this is important is that you can easily, inadvertently, create Pools that contain questions on topics you didn’t intend or of a difficulty level you didn’t want. I discovered this since I review (and sometimes edit) all the questions I’ve selected.

Apparently, however, the question filtering capability in Connect itself works correctly when you are creating an Assignment (whether an exam or otherwise).

I was not given a timetable for when this will be corrected.
