The narrator’s mother in “The First Day” is protective and caring over her child and wants the best for her. When I was younger my mom was very protective of the area I went to for school. She changed my school after my first day because the one I was going to was not the best since it was shared with a high school, and she wanted me to go to a better school. When we got there, I also had to help my mom with filling out forms such as the blue card since she didn’t know much English and only Spanish. In this school, uniform was required and different for each grade. Some details from the text that made a strong impression on me were how attentive the young girl is noticing emotions through facial expressions and her ability to describe everything in exact detail such as what she was wearing.
Thanks for sharing these parallels between the experience described in the story and your own experience entering school, especially the perspective of the mother who is both very invested in securing the best possible experience for her child and hampered by her own limitations.
