Assignments – Week #6

This week we will be continuing to focus on our Literacy Narratives.  Your work for this week is as follows:

  1. Submit your Literacy Narrative Draft by Sunday, September 26th.  Your draft should be placed in our shared Google Doc Folder, inside the sub-folder Literacy Narrative Drafts.  Your essay should have a title that you have selected that tells the reader something about your literacy narrative, but the file should be named “Your Name Literacy Narrative Draft”.  Some of you were a little confused and called your pre-writing a draft, so be sure to retitle your pre-writing so that it’s clear which is your Pre-Write and which is your draft.
  2. Peer Review – An important part of your work this week will be reading and commenting on your Writing Group members’ drafts.  In our shared folder “Literacy Narrative Drafts”, you will find a file titled “Literacy Narrative Peer Review”.  You can also find the link to that file HERE.  Follow the instructions in that document in order to provide feedback to the members of your group.  Please complete your Peer Review by Tuesday, September 28th.
  3. Reading – Please read Richard Straub, “Responding — Really Responding — to Other Students’ Writing” (JTC pp.43-54).  In a comment on this post, please share one idea from Straub’s essay that you will try to carry with you into your work as a peer reviewer this week.  Please share your comment by Wednesday, Sept. 29th.
  4. Conferences:  Each Writing Group will be meeting with me this week to discuss your Literacy Narratives.  These meetings will happen on Monday and Wednesday and will take the place of our regular class session on Wednesday.  Groups 1, 2, and 3 will be meeting with me on Monday, and Groups 4, 5, 6 will be meeting during our regular class time on Wednesday. All conferences will take place in our regular classroom, NVC 12-130.  These sessions are mandatory.

  1. When I like the writing, explain to the author why it makes sense and why it works. Instead of telling them “I love how you ended it” but elaborating on the “because” so the writer knows what about it was good. This can help them have a better understanding of what exactly are the readers picking up from the writing and if that is what they had intended.

  2. Upon reading, “Responding — Really Responding — to Other Students’ Writing” I realized when I respond to my peer’s writing kind of vague. After reading I realized it’s most likely better to be specific so I can state my feedback more clear and let the author understand what my opinion of their piece is. So rather than saying, I liked the part with this and this. I should say why I think it’s a good place for this to be. Also what it might bring to their piece with this.

  3. After reading “Responding-Really Responding- to Other Students’ Writing” , one idea i have decided to carry with me as a peer reviewer this week is asking questions. I believe it is important to ask questions as a reader to really understand the depth of the authors writing. Thus as a peer reviewer i want to ask my peers questions when providing feedback that way their writing is sufficient in answering any questions another reader might have.

  4. One idea I will try to carry with me into my peer reviewer work from “Responding-Really Responding-to Other Students Writing” is to “Sound like you normally sound when you’re speaking with a friend or acquaintance. Talk to the writer. You’re not just marking up a text; you’re responding to the writer.” I will focus on sounding like myself instead of a teacher. Doing this will help me give better suggestions while also letting the author know I am not there to judge their essay. I am there to help them make their essay more appealing and sophisticated.

  5. After my reading of “Responding-Really Responding- to Other Students’ Writing”, an idea I can get from the reading is to really go really thorough with my peer review. To me, critique is very important because it can change how you would look at yourself. With a proper detailed peer review, we can get an idea of where we need work on and why it wasn’t correct the first time.

  6. One idea that stuck with me after reading “Responding-Really Responding- to Other Students’ Writing” is the fact that responder doesn’t try to force his ideas onto the student’s essay and offers encouragement and praise. As a peer-reviewer, I will carry this idea with me in order to give my group-mates valuable feedback without taking away from their flow or ideas that they have for their story.

  7. In his essay “Responding – Really Responding to Other Students’ Writing” Richard Straub says not to sugar coat your peer review, but also says not to be rude about it either. I definitely agree. I will write my peer reviews with this in mind.

  8. Following, the reading ” Responding-Really Responding-to Other Students’ Writing”, One point that adhered to me is when giving the advice to be specific. Giving examples as well, help’s the student with correcting their mistake. Also when giving compliments to be sincere and also specific, because they go a long way for the student.

  9. After reading “Responding-Really Responding- to Other Students’ Writing”, I’ve noticed that in order to conduct a well-written paper, you can’t leave readers wondering questions. Details are key here and that is what I will make sure to keep an eye out for details when reviewing their papers. Another thing, dialogue, it gives the reading a better sense of understanding when reading the story. Questions are also something I will carry over when reviewing my peer’s papers. If there’s something I’m still wondering about, I will ask them to further explain. Which will ultimately help them write a stronger paper.

  10. When Reading “Responding-Really Responding to Other Students’ writing”, she explains how readers peer editing can be tedious at times and people do it to get over with it. After saying that she proceeds to give advice on how to give peer reviews as a reader. Some things I picked and agree with her advice is to not storm the writing piece with criticism and completely change it to the point where it is not their work. Being supportive will help them revise mistakes creating a stronger writing piece.

  11. After reading “Responding-Really Responding to Other Students’ writing”, one idea that I plan to carry on is the idea of commenting normally, as if you were the author’s friend. Sometimes commenting can come off too serious and could make the author feel like a judge is the one commenting on the text. Instead, trying to sound supportive and helpful while peer-reviewing could actually help the author more. You do not want to come off as rude or critic every little thing about the authors text.

  12. After I read Richard Straub’s essay titled “Responding-Really Responding to Other Students’ Writing” something that stuck out to me was when he mentioned that we should try and avoid making those plain and basic comments but think more deeply and address any issue that the essay you are reviewing might have. But to address in in the most respectful and helpful way. This is something that not only will benefit your peer but it can also benefit you because as you are commenting you know what can make you writing piece more elaborated.

  13. I belive that one way to get better at writing is by including questions in your essay. I feel like this keeps the flow going and also has you elaborating more on your thoughts and what you were thinking at the moment. After reading the chapter given to us i realized that being more detailed and digging deep into my peer’s essay is very important instead of being vague and quick with it. Clarifying and mentioning things that need work on is much more helpful because it will only make their essay better.

  14. After reading Responding-Really Responding to Other Students’ writing” an idea I want to make use of as a peer reviewer is being specific with what needs to be changed or edited. It helps the writer more if you’re being honest. Write as much as you can, not just a few words but full sentences.

  15. After reading Richard Straub’s essay titled “Responding-Really Responding to Other Students’ Writing I plan on carrying out the idea of making multiple comments and to make them seem helpful instead of the author think they are being judged in a bad way instead of me trying to help them.

  16. After reading Richard Straubs essay something I plan on carrying is not being a vague peer commenter/reader. I plan to expand my critiques and help my peers the best I can. I need to be more specific when commenting on peoples work and help them figure out what needs to be edited and changed/

  17. After reading Richard Straub’s essay something I did when was reading was look at the piece of writing through the writer’s eyes. I didn’t try to make it my own cause it wasn’t, I did however make suggestions that could put them in their particular direction. I tried to be more specific with my comments to see what the writer was trying to convey. I did my best on trying to give the most feedbacks and not be stingy.
